AA and CP on the way out?

I think this is a bad move for GM. One of the huge benefits of AA and CP is that they’re interface specialists and their technology can move faster than vehicle manufacturers. I had a 10 year old Audi, but could still do everything I needed to do because CarPlay worked fast off my phone…as long as my phone kept upgrading, so did CarPlay. No worries about outdated processors chugging in the car’s infortainment.

maybe this is what GM wants. If their car’s technology gets outdated, people will need to buy a new one.

AAOS is different in that manufacturers will eventually stop updating vehicles if the history of both the car and phone industries are anything to go by. Google does not put out AAOS updates by themselves nor would manufacturers want them to given the level of customization manufacturers do on top of the OS.

Google putting more effort into AAOS is fine, provided AA/CP are still left as options. There's no indication Google is doing anything to stop AA development anyway.

For Android mobile users, there is no reason for needing AA, if..., AAOS brings some pace with the num of applications available. The gap is not that significant now (assuming Waze comes onboard).

For me, the real missing one is to read and send by voice WhatsApp messages
Others apps? really have them all on AAOS, and prefer it than AA.

I suppose Polestar are somehow under pressure to bring AA receiver to current P2 users, similar to other makers, but for what incentive? Probably stop investing and sunset the current generation of P2 infotainment system, and move to refreshed H/W in MY25 to the one of the P3/4.

Right now I agree (though I know there are some people who want AA anyway for specific apps that AAOS doesn't have yet). What about in the future, though? What happens when Polestar stops updating the infotainment system? What happens when Google decides to deprecate support for maps on old versions of android? Or Spotify? Or any other internet-connected app you might like? The "experience" around AA/CP aren't as good as a well designed AAOS system but the benefit they have is that AA/CP can be easily updated without any work from the car manufacturers, since there's no update on the car side.

It's not even about getting new features - it's about having a remotely modern system for apps to run on because old systems stop getting support. Google might do a pretty admirable job keeping compatibility for most of their bigger apps on old devices, but the lifetime of a car is far longer than the lifetime of a phone.

In a perfect world we'd have upgradable infotainment systems like the swappable head units that cars used to almost universally support, but I think the ship has sailed on that one unless we see some major changes to the industry.
