Hi guys,
I have the Plus and Pilot with HK sound.
I replaced my rear door woofers and tweeter with the Infinity Kappa 60.11cs lit I had from my previous car.
Had to buy adaptors to fit the 165mm woofers.
However, I get distortion from the door when lower frequencies kick in. Anyone experienced this?
I kept the upgraded tweeters in placed but had to switch back to the stock HK/Volvo woofers
Hello andreantunes,
I don't have any issues after replacing the stock coaxial speakers with the Audison APX 6.5 COAXIAL speakers I used for the back doors. I looked into the specs for the Kappa and those are 2 Ohm the Audison are 4 Ohm. Maybe that could be an issue. If you have a multimeter check the ohm of the stock speakers. Did you also replaced the tweeter in the doors or just the 6.5"? The front door and the A pilar speakers int he base audio system share the same amp wiring and the stock tweeters have a capacitor to filter the frequencies. Im guessing it is the same set up int he HK sound system? Therefore you added the crossovers? Maybe check for polarity? My PDF guide with wires color might be different than the HK sound system. If yo have another component speaker 4 Ohm I will test with that too.

Hi!
In the front I replaced the tweeters on the A pillar with the Infinity Kappa tweeters. And that what was a BIG difference in detail and resolution of the sound. Some of the mudiness is now replaced by clarity and detail improving the soundstage too.
On the rear doors I also replaced the tweeters with Kappa and installed the crossover. Again, better clarity and resolution but less noticeable than in the front seats.
Regarding the woofers on the rear doors, I will check impedance but I think the distortion may be due to two factors:
1- The fact that the Inifinity woofers produce much lower frequencies and have higher output at the same level than the stock HK woorfers.
2- I ordered some dampering material to treat the doors and improve the overall insulation of the installation on the Kappas as I think the doors are not acoustically prepared for such lower frequencies
(on a side note I also suspect that one of the Kappa woofers may be damaged. Will test it at home but distortion came from both doors)

On a final note, today I will replace the 3 front 100mm midwoofers from the front doors and dashboard. I bought 3 units of Focal K2 Power ES100. The fitting adaptors arrived today.
Will let you know about the results.

Have a great week!

Questions for you guys , as i understood stock speakers are 7 ohms ? I add a subwoofer to H/K and want to improve speakers now . Did you notice a difference in quality with aftermarket speakers? You put 4ohm speakers is it safe for OEM amp or it can be damaged? As ohms drops does it increase volume output? Can i change just front and dash speakers for now or it better to change all around to avoid issues with H/K amplifier? Thanks

I am not a professional installer here. A little search online "If the speaker impedance is higher, the amplifier will supply the same voltage, but be unable to push as much current through the higher coil resistance - hence the speaker will be quieter. If the speaker impedance is lower, then the sound will be louder, but the increased current will put a significant strain on the amplifier. It may just run rather hot, but it may also destroy the output transistors, and it will probably distort the signal quite badly trying to deliver power beyond its rated capability."
To answer your question about the impedance of the stock speakers, yes the ones from the 8 speaker system are around 7 ohms ( I measured them using a multimeter), however, I don't know about the speakers from the HK sound system. Maybe "andreantunes" can measured the ones he already took out.
I originally went with the Audison Prima speakers after reading how well they work for a driver from a Volvo XC40. There wasn't any information about the Polestar system. I noticed an improvement in sound quality with the Audison compared to the stock speakers, I also installed a 8" JBL Bass pro SL. I did not have the stock speakers for long after I took delivery of my car, I think the volume output is fine now, not too loud no too low.
I think " andreantunes" did a partial swap of speakers and everything went well with his car except he was/is having some issues with the rear component speakers. Hopefully we would hear from him soon about how the finishing swapping all speakers worked. I will say you will be fine just replacing the front speakers.
One thing I would like to do with my install is to add a DSP, I feel that the equalizer settings in the 8 speaker system are lacking and I would like to fully use the new speakers to the max by having the ability to calibrate them better.

Hi!
I have the HK sound with the Plus package and I have already replaced the following:
  • front pillar tweers with Infinity Kappa 60.11cs
  • dashboard 4” midwoofer with Focal ES100K (didn’t replace the stock HK tweeter as it’s quite good actually)
  • front doors 4” midwoofers also replaced with Focal ES100K
  • rear doors, replaced tweeters with Focal ES series

Results are Excellent. Much more definition, clearer Mids like voices and guitars. Much better soundstage and overall performance of the system. Also much thighter sound and now the 4” go lower giving you that extra warm feel on bass or drums.
Regarding impedance, here’s what I measured from the HK speakers I took out:
  • Dashboard 4” midwoofer Volvo part 31456871 - 5 ohms
  • front door 4” midwoofers Volvo part 31456830 - 5 ohms
  • Front A pillar tweeters Volvo part 31456837 - 3,5 ohms
  • Rear Door tweeters (bigger than the front pillar) Volvo part 31489121 - 12 ohms

Hope this helps. In the nexts days I can tell you about the impedance of the rear door woofers as I’m replacing them too.

Andre

Thanks for details Andre 🙂, i see you use component kit , did you use only the woofer from the kit and why not to opte for full range speaker if you use only half of kit ?
[*]My budget is less and i check for speaker ~200 $ or less. As i allready have a Hertz MP250 D4.3 Pro with HCP 1D for sub should i go with Hertz for speakers? Maybe Hertz Cento CX100 ? Or someone can recommend a better option. Thanks

Thank your for the update! It is great to hear that the sounds improved. As with mine, I think there is a great difference. Thank you for sharing the information about the HK sound system speakers too.

I had that component kit (Infinity Kappa 60.11cs) from my previous car.
I did install the woofers on the rear doors but I had some distortion. Not sure if there is something wrong with one of the speakers ior if the doors need some dampening as they should.
So, I ordered some dampening material and will do it later this week.
Those kappa woofer start at 45hz and I don't think the doors are fully prepared for those low frequencies.

As for the crossovers, I used them for the tweeters on the rear doors.

Hi artem92115,
Yes, the original rear door woofer are Volvo part number 31489043.
They measure 150mm, 6", which is an odd size for aftermarket speakers.
In my case, I bought the fitting adaptors for Volvo XC40 for 165mm for the rear doors.
The problem is that the fitting is not exactly correct. I had to make extra holes because the 4 screw holes don't match the door.

Getting back to this thread, so the original rear door woofers are Volvo part number 31489043 and they measure 4 ohms.
The complete list for the HK sound is:
  • Dashboard 4” midwoofer Volvo part 31456871 - 5 ohms
  • front door 4” midwoofers Volvo part 31456830 - 5 ohms
  • Front A pillar tweeters Volvo part 31456837 - 3,5 ohms
  • Rear Door tweeters (bigger than the front pillar) Volvo part 31489121 - 12 ohms
  • Rear door woofers Volvo part 31489043 - 4 ohms
  • Behind rear headrests 4” midwoofers Volvo part 31456830 - 5 ohms
On an update to my car, as I suspected, unfortunatelly one of my Infinity Kappa 60.11cs woofers is showing some distortion on certain frequencies. The coil is probably damaged. I sent it for repair.
But in the meanwhile I ordered 2 Focal K2 Power ES165K. ( check here )
To install them perfectly I had to trim the plastic circle on the door panel:
Grille Automotive lighting Hood Automotive design Motor vehicle

Automotive lighting Automotive design Vehicle Motor vehicle Gadget

Dremel drill does wonders. This little plastic circle fitted the original HK speaker which is 150mm instead of 165mm. The result was that the speaker cone would not move perfectly, adding distortion and possibly damaging the speaker.
The final result was this:
Automotive tire Motor vehicle Tread Automotive design Vehicle

I installed the speakers yesterday, so they are still burning in. Noticeable difference compared to stock speakers but I can tell straight away that my previous Kappas were much better performers than these Focal K2. In everything!
Once I have the Kappas repaired I will probably test them as they are really exceptional speakers. They are car audiophile grade for sure.

Great work, i m still thinking about speaker model , until now i check Hertz CX100 for dash and front doors🤔

Nice to see pics of the stock speakers, thanks for that! Anyone got some pics of the front/rear (HK) air woofers? Would be interesting to see what kind of solution they've built there...and plan how to improve it :p
