FitcamX view angle modification

The current version of the FitcamX for the Polestar 2 fits very nicely to the car, but they have designed it in such a way that the camera itself points too much downwards, so the dashboard takes up quite a bit of space in the picture. That also means there is potentially interesting information lost in the upper half of the picture. FitcamX has said that they are working on a revision to the housing, and that customers will receive this when it is ready. Moving over the innards to a new housing isn't very difficult if you have the tools (basically a small philips screwdriver), but I'm still not convinced that it is something everybody will be comfortable doing.

While I'm waiting for a new housing, I decided to modify my camera to improve the situation. The modification means cutting/removing an internal feature in the housing, and also 3D-printing a new part to go in there to hold the camera module at a different angle.

This is just a brief overview of the mod, as I guess most people would rather just wait for a new housing instead. Anyways, here goes.

After opening the housing and removing the electronics (not strictly necessary, but highly recommended to avoid damage to it), there's a fixing feature for the camera module that will need to be removed:

Automotive tire Automotive lighting Bumper Rim Automotive exterior

I used a pair of electronics side cutters and a knife to get most of it, and then a Dremel to remove the leftovers, leaving me with this:

White Wood Gas Auto part Machine

Then I designed and printed this little part:

Rectangle Automotive exterior Auto part Wood Bumper

It fits between the existing features, and will hold the camera at a new angle. Installed like so:

After installation, the lens protrudes a bit further out, and also points more upwards than before:

Automotive design Motor vehicle Carbon Rim Automotive exterior

Automotive design Carbon Rim Auto part Tints and shades

There is still quite a bit of the dashboard showing, but far less than before, and there is more information in the upper part of the picture. It is possible to take it even further, but that would require more modification of the original housing, and I didn't bother with that. I'm quite happy with the result I got.

Here's some sample footage, but keep in mind that it was late night and very dark outside, so footage is perhaps not the best. For the last part, the brilliant headlights of the PS2 is showcased on a dark and narrow road at good speed (make sure to watch in 4k, might take some time before YT has made that available) :

If anyone would like to do this to their FitcamX, I'm happy to share the file for printing the small part needed.

Edit: The file for the 3D-printed adapter is available for download from this link. It is a quick print, print with 0.2 or 0.3 mm layer height, 3 or more perimeters. No supports.

Excellent work. Yeah, please do share the file as I'd love to modify mine as well.
I pre-ordered two days ago and yesterday they told me they expect to ship the reworked angle within 1-2 weeks.

So you'd get the new version from factory, then. That's good, because even if it's not going to be very difficult to move the electronics to a new housing (as many will have to do), it is still a somewhat delicate operation, and care must be taken.

I've added a link to the bottom of the OP where the file can be downloaded from. If you (or anyone else) end up doing this mod, please post pictures/feedback to this thread. :)
Sorry for the hijack but anyone know if this can be sourced from the UK?
it appears AliExpress sell them but is it as simple as googling “fitcamx”
@mrodid you pay tolavgift for shipping camera to Norway? Today post office charged me 280nok.

Thank you for sharing this. The video was also very nice. Do you notice an improvement when stopped at a light? The current version doesn’t let you see the light when you’re stopped so you can’t prove you had the right of way.

No, I didn't pay anything extra. Probably just pure luck, though.

I would assume so, but I haven't stopped at any lights after the install. There's no doubt that it captures more useful data, at least.

Strange that I had to pay :(
After asking Fitcamx for an update on the modified housing last week, I’ve just had an email from them saying that they are now shipping with the modification. I’ve just ordered and will provide updates here.

I was also contacted by them today to confirm whether my address was the same as for my original order, and that the new housing was on it's way to be shipped. Will be interesting to see the difference, and by how much it improves on their original design.

I hope it is at least as good as my mod, but if not, I can just keep my modded version.

I have problem with recorded video. When i'm trying to watch video it's able only for 3 seconds, then stop. And this is recording in 1 min loop. Is it normal? How to fix it ?

Did you download the videos to your phone over WiFi or did you copy directly from the SD card to your computer?

I didn't download but just tried to watch over WiFi. But this is so stupid that I have hundreds 1-minutes movies... Do you have same ? It's saving and starting new recording every 1 min.

if I recall, their options were 1 or 3 minute clips, though the default I thought was 3 minutes…

I have only 1 min to choose and can play only 3 seconds from footage because it's stopping.
Better get the videos to a computer. I think I have seen the same problem when trying to just view videos on the fly over WiFi, but downloading to the phone does work. However, it is really slow, so better pop the memory card and copy to a computer.

1 minute clip length is the only possible setting, and that's not really a problem in my opinion. If you really want a long video, it is fairly easy to join the files together on a computer.
I bought this camera to have possibility to view video in the car f.e when police stop you. I'm disappointed now :( if I good remember 1 minute film is about 250mb so it's not easy to download. And if I want to see exactly moment I want, I need to download several 1min length films to find right one.
