Just when I thought I was out...

They pull me back in.

My Polestar 2 lease ended in December, but I was done driving it long before that. The first year was a fantastic experience. But it quickly went downhill. By the end, the Polestar 2 was one of the most disappointing cars I've ever had.

But I just can't shake this brand. The minimalist design ethos, emphasis on sustainability, and performance in more than just a straight line - Polestar ticks all the boxes for me. And I was able to get a great lease deal just in time to see the US tax credits get killed.

So next week I take delivery of my new 3, plus, pilot and pro, in midnight.

I've read all the feedback, both good and bad, and I'm willing to roll the dice. Let's see if my 2nd Polestar turns out better than my first.

Brave given your experience of the 2, but totally understandable. No one (even the Geely stablemates) are making EVs that are close to Polestar in all those areas you highlighted as important. I test drove the C40 when I was going through my selection process and could have gone that way if I felt comfort was more important than handling.

Test drove a 3 earlier in the year and really liked it: doesn't feel any bigger than the 2 on the road even though it clearly is, and inside is so much better designed while still being obviously Polestar. Drives more like a hot hatch despite being a large SUV! It's also got the comfort nailed so really is hard to find reasons not to get one if it's in your budget (and working on the assumption that at some point the Volvo platform has to become more reliable).

That said, if I had to change today, I think I would personally lean towards the 4 simply because the Zeekr platform seems much more solid than any of the Volvo based ones. However, the more 4s I see (they've become more common than the 2 even in my neck of the woods) the more I hate the backend! If I got one I would have to have the piece of body that sits where the rear window would have been wrapped in gloss black.

Went off on a bit of a tangent there! You are going into it with your eyes open so I'm sure you will love your 3.

Obviously we don't have the 4 yet here in the states, but even if we did, I'd stick with the 3. The stlying of the 4 doesn't do it for me. I find the 3 to be a much better looking vehicle. The 3 also has a far better interior. Even though the 4 isn't for sale yet, they do have them in showrooms. I've sat in the 4 (only driven the 3), and the 4 interior felt decidedly low rent compared to the 3. The interior quality of the 4 felt much closer to the 2 than the 3.

Can you elaborate on why things went downhill so quickly after the first year? I'm two years in with my P2 and no signs of any problems so far.

(Great username btw - and, from one Saab fan to another, I fully concur with your design ethos sentiments!)

After about a year the car started to experience significant squeaks and rattles. I've had a lot of cars in my life, including a 2018 Model 3, which was notorious for terrible build quality. My Polestar 2 was the noisiest, rattliest, squeakiest car I've ever had. I've also owned cars with fabulous build quality - Audi S6, Audi e-Tron, BMW iX - those are solidly built, quiet, and pristine. The Polestar 2 was far too close in price to those cars to be built so poorly.

Like many, I experienced the never-ending saga of the backup camera not working. Eventually it gets to a point where you just expect it not to work. The usual tech gremlins reared their ugly head from time to time- including about a week where I had no network connectivity at all.

And then the final straw - complete propulsion failure, leaving my wife stranded on the side of the highway, requiring a tow of 90 miles.

My car was a 2021 Launch Edition, so I may have been unlucky, which can happen when you are an early adopter. I'm hopeful that this car has been on the market long enough that I will have missed the initial quality problems. We shall see.

But the price is right, and I love the car. Sometimes you gotta be willing to take a risk.

I just swapped my 2 for a 3 a couple of weeks ago and let me tell you, these cars came from different planets. The 3 is SO FAR ABOVE the 2 in just about every area that it feels shocking that they originated from the same company.

Literally the only thing I miss from my 2 is that the ACC controls make a lot more sense than the two-handed nightmare that the 3 features.

Oh, and having a working garage door opener was nice too.

Otherwise, no contest.

Hoping that you get a great experience!

But disagree with the 4 interiour… the 4 is totally amazing interiour wise! A democar in the space might not feel as good.
I thought the 3 had bad interiour based on the demo in the space in sthlm, but when I finally drive one last summer it was fantastic!
the worn democar that thousands of people had been in was not good.

but you made the right choice ( even if you couldnt choose the 4) the 3 is wonderful!
I had a 4 as a loaner for three days and totally fell in love with it, but it has a few bad things that the 3 does not have, like how you cant feel where it is on the road…

But when I can I want to have both in my garage!
