For those without 4G here is one suggested option. Realise a few fixes have been suggested before so sorry if repeating a previous thread but this appears to be the official Volvo/Polestar possible workaround. Assume where says T Mobile Germany will change according to location and as it says "MAY" seems far from guaranteed but hopefully
might help some owners.
4G have mysteriously been rock solid for me since about 10 days ago. I have no clue if anything was changed. Also the connection is apparently established quicker. Before it was more like a 50/50 game. Any Norwegians here noticed a difference lately?
I am not Norwegian, but Dutch. I am seeing the same thing, 4G seems to work now. I do have the feeling it is slower to connect (cant confirm). When I get into the car it takes quite a while (about 2 minutes) before it connects.
No 4G at all on my short round trip to a local park for a family walk this morning. Restarting the system and setting with the mobile data on/off don't help. My software version is still of 1st November. Has anyone in the UK got a working solution?
I don’t know if this is a red herring or not, but I’ve started (at someone’s suggestion on this forum, but can’t remember who) turning the car off using the play/pause button every time I park the car. There is also a button buried in the car menu to do the same.
4g has worked flawlessly since doing so, though admittedly our 4g issues here in the US have been pretty mild compared to the UK/EU.
I am suspecting that just getting out of the car without “turning it off” suspends the radios in an improper way, though I’d be very curious as to what @rgledhill would think of this theory.
I think there may be something to the theory that it’s an issue with how the car turned off last. I’ve noticed some issues with that and my 4G outages seem correlated with me doing something out of the routine like going to a bunch of errands and not having that much off time at stops as I usually do. So I wonder if the car assumes it has X time to sleep and then the 4G can’t turn back on when I try to get it to wake. It needs car-coffee it seems.
In terms of inappropriate turning off, a couple days back I took a call while on the road and when I got to the destination picked up the phone and left the car, continuing the call. As I left and locked the car, I heard the song I was listening to come back on even though I had “turned off” and locked the car. Luckily I was fairly close to the car to hear and catch it. I went in an repeated the locking up and then everything turned off properly.
In that sense I wonder if Bluetooth, 4G, and 12V issues are all related? Like if a Bluetooth interruption during a quick shut off makes the infotainment think it needs to keep going, so it keeps going until basically the 12V is nearly drained, and then the car doesn’t have enough in the tank to start back up properly or at all the next time?
Not sure I can provide much more insight @StarPole unfortunately! However it does feel like the 4G is often more flaky after the car's only been turned off for a short period of time compared to a bit longer. Then 2-3 days and super-low power mode seems to result in the best results of all. All of this does feel like the 4G module isn't being shut down and/or physically powered off properly.
4G modem modules can be a fairly considerable drain on a battery but I doubt anywhere enough to flatten a car 12V battery overnight. However what seems to happen with so many control units is that just one single ECU not going to sleep properly can cause others to not sleep properly in a chain, resulting in a high current drain overall as the final "master" ECU thinks the car isn't ready to shut down - and all that together is definitely enough to flatten a 12V battery over several hours. I'm 99% expecting that a non-shutting down ECU somewhere in the car is responsible for the flat 12V batteries people are finding (or very flaky behaviour followed by total shutdown, often with a cascade of weird errors). It probably also explains why some people get weird errors when they first power the car up, but then the car drives just fine, because perhaps one of the ECUs didn't shutdown properly and needed to be restarted, throwing an error to the main ECU which then displays it on the screen. Once the car is up and running, of course, the DC-DC convertor kicks in to charge up the 12V from the main high voltage battery so after the first few seconds while everything powers up and before the high-voltage battery is enabled, all should be well - assuming that any not-properly-shutdown modules have now been reset properly and operate correctly. This is also why the "lock the car and walk away for 10 minutes" is such a help to clearing these errors, as all being well all modules will then shut down cleanly and therefore start up again correctly.
Why am I so sure? Because this is exactly what the Kona and e-Niro have suffered from from day one, and still do as Hyundai refuse to accept it's a problem. I lost track of how many times I had to jump-start the Kona for flattening the 12V battery and I believe it's linked to why the ID.3 has suffered flat battery problems too.
I really hoped I'd got away from this by moving on from the Kona! Still, Polestar seem keen to listen, whereas Hyundai have very fat fingers jammed firmly in their ears. Good luck trying to explain to a Hyundai dealer the above theory - I got looked at like I was from Mars and told to basically go away and come back if it does it again as it's most likely I left a light on
I have a completely uninformed theory that seems to correlate with the "short journey, insufficient time to shut down". I have had the Android 10 / 1 December update recently at a Volvo dealership. Things seemed stable (with LTE instead of 4g) until when charging, pre heating and getting the car loaded for some work. I was in and out of the drivers seat, locking the car and opening the boot while I had used the programmed preheat ongoing. The following day I used the manual preheat and had the same empty triangle until I had at least one hour out of the car. Then this morning I did a reset after seeing the empty triangle and before setting off (waiting on my wife.....). LTE loaded up properly as I drove down our street.
So theory is if you muck around with charging through opening doors AND / OR sitting in the driver's seat intermittently you will get bad karma (or is it voodoo?). Polestar 2 does not like to have interrupted beauty sleep - and the concept sold of just "get in and drive" is, at best, optimistic.
Also, for the first time I noticed a bright green "READY" flash up on the driver display before setting off - when everything was working. Is this "new"?

This I morning, I saw it again. It comes up once you 'put the car in gear'. Actually, I might have seen it before, but I am on the Nov. update for 5 weeks now.
When I took mine in for the 4G not working Gareth told me that the GPS/road signs and Connect button were all connected with the 4G so wouldn't work if the 4G stopped working. I think he meant the 4G aerial or something.
He had to leave the battery disconnected overnight to discharge the small backup battery and then reboot before he could even communicate with the car. He didn't know why it had stopped, assumed a software glitch somewhere as he didn't replace anything to my knowledge..
I would suggest you get it booked in for the latest update and Android 10 as everything works now and the manual now works too. Whilst it is in get them to lubricate the cv boots too!
It does seem to be more economical too but a bit early to tell for definite as only picked up on Friday afternoon.
If you want I can start a new post showing what has been changed with the latest update dated 1st December.
On average I'm getting more 4G uptime over recent weeks, but definitely seeing more empty triangle activity too. One day we should be able to get in our cars without even glancing at that Icon, enjoy uninterrupted connectivity, and retire about 5 threads on WIFI and 4G on the forum (then what are going to talk about?!). One day my friends, one day.....
All the same with me. No 4G whatsoever and connect, sos buttons not functioning. Going in on Weds to see if they can just update the software while I wait....I am not holding out any hope and think the car will need a disconnect before they can connect.
Update: tried the power on/off through the infotainment and when I came back to the car 4G came back. Could be coincidental but the other methods didn't work for me. If the 4G goes away again and it's the empty triangle situation, I will try the power on/off method again.
after feeling a bit like I warranted the response this guy gives in the video below...I am glad the power off seems to help mitigate some folks issues.
My 4g has stopped working now an I have had to get it booked in as a reset doesn't seem to sort it. The car is 2 weeks old so I hoped it would be on teh latest software...
As an aside I can hear a low speed squeaking noise from the front left has anyone had this issue before?
I think the latest update came out just after you got your car so you may have just missed it.
Not had an issue with squeaking from left front. Is it on full lock or normal driving? If on full lock you need to have your cv boots lubricated.
I have noticed a rattle on mine from front left which goes when a passenger is sitting there so I guess it is a wire or something under the seat but not followed up on it due to the weather.
Hi, its not on full lock it appears to be more when I let off the throttle and regen. Its not loud but it makes a weird squeak noise outside which is a bit embarrassing...
I thought it may be the brakes but I did a few hard stops and it still appears to be present but it is intermittent suspect something needs lubricating or similar.
Hi all. Anyone manage to solve the hollow triangle issue, had for a few days now but only travelled about 10 miles with a few very short drives (love lockdown!). Not called PS yet but if anyone has had any joy...cheers
Mine came back on the day I was due at the service centre. I did nothing at all to cure it as all had been tried and failed. Software update thus far has cured it and the broken WiFi too.
This issue is really odd. I had not had the hollow triangle issue before, rather the problem with the 'x' This was fixed by Polestar in their supplier's networks a few weeks ago. I was happy, good signal. Then one-day hollow triangle.
I then left the car a few days before I next drove it. This caused the infotainment system to restart, but I still had a hollow triangle. I closed the infotainment system down as per Polestar instructions and restarted. Still hollow triangle.
I then tried their other hint of turning off and on the 4G connection. This also did not work.
So started playing with the wifi, and my mobile phone hotspot. The car never sees any networks. It used to see the neighbours networks, but not after November update.
So eventually turned off the wifi. It had always been on, but not connecting to anything. Turned off and on the 4G, and 4G came up working. A few seconds later it stoped, then reconnected and stayed there.
A coincidence maybe, who knows. All rather hit and miss.
Granted I haven't driven a lot in the month I've had my car, but no issues with 4G until today. Hollow triangle for my whole 15 mile trip. Rebooted infotainment twice to no avail. Then I pull back into my garage and both 4G and wifi are working again. Driving for the first time at negative temperatures today, wonder if that's at all related.
I only saw this now. Since I know you are also in Chicago it is probably worth adding that I, too, had 4G being non-functional for the entire (same?) morning. I eventually pushed the "connect" button (which worked!) and talked to CS. We went through the usual routine (yes WiFi and Bluetooth are working, yes I have rebooted the infotainment system, ...) until she eventually suggested to "lock the car for an hour and then check back". Indeed, after doing so my 4G was back (and has been ever since). I did not previously have problems with 4G.
So given the coincidence in time and location, maybe this was something related to an outage at the service provider (which I think is AT&T)?
I thought i had cracked it, 5 days all working, but for wifi and manual, today empty triangle and then x in corner, phone lost connection and not charging.
has anybody else noticed that during the silence (if you have had this of course) that sometimes happens the indicators do not make a noise, hope the outside warning noise is operating otherwise we are driving illegally
