My guess is the “all apps” list in the car is populated by hand and they (Google? Polestar? both?) haven’t gotten around to hooking up one end or the other of a proper query API, since regular search works fine if you know what you’re looking for.

I think you are misleading... The list is specifically for Android Auto apps and not AAOS (as stated in the filter).

I had the Google Podcasts app on the car; I suspect that by connecting either my Android or iPhone, it installed on its own. I've never seen it in the Play Store as an option, but it was definitely on the car for me to play without phone connected. Now I can no longer figure out how to get it back.

Google Podcasts has always worked for me with audio commands, but I only saw the UI once about a year ago. It magically appeared and was there for one drive and then I've never seen it again. I have no idea what caused it to display, and I've never seen it as an app icon or in the Play Store or in the installed apps list. So the Assistant has it built in, but it's lacking the UI and some of the resulting functionality, like downloading podcasts. It has had some weird behavior as well, like it quit understanding skip ahead/back (fast forward, whatever synonym I tried that usually works), but that seems to come and go. Right now it seems to be working pretty well.

Myself and @Mick have made this observation before. I have NEVER had the Google Podcasts UI in the car. It has never appeared and never worked through the phone or assistant. So I have one of the other podcast apps in the car, but would prefer to keep it all google and have an actual UI in the car.

I have used and really like Pockcasts on my android phone and am really disappointed by the version in the car. It doesn't have so many features, and I don't really see any good replacement besides maybe spotify, though I'd prefer to keep podcasts and music on different apps. Wish google would release a solid podcast app for the car, or pocketcasts actually ported more functionality.

100% agree; I'm using pocket casts and it's so frustrating i have to select an up next on my phone, then sync it to the car, rather than using the car interface to do it... lack of local caching / streaming only is a PITA also. i'd hoped their recent updates would address some of it; but not holding my breath - maybe i need to reduce the star rating on my review and make more comments!

The other day I was sitting in my car and checking some settings and I cam across the Google Podcasts app installed in the IHU. I don't know how it was installed or who installed it because I have never used Google Podcasts, don't listen to podcasts, and I don't intend on using it either. But it's there for some unknown reason. So maybe everyone has a Google Podcasts app installed now.

Why didn’t they name the product “Google Automotive” or some such thing? The confusion from calling it Android-anything seems foolhardy.

It’s never too late to change!

Because in true Google fashion, they also use that term for something related, but different.

Google Automotive (Services), refers to them offering more a la carte options for manufacturers. Like if they wanted to only use Google Maps as the native navigation, or integrate Google Assistant, but nothing else.
