Polestar Removed my Performance Software Upgrade and I have no way to prove it was ever there

The TLDR is in the title, here's the whole story.

I bought my Polestar certified preowned last year and, lucky for me, it came with the Performance Upgrade. My local Space rep confirmed that the upgrade would stay with the car through ownership changes. Then in April/May this year, like a few others here on the forums, my Launch tab in the Performance app disappeared. I reached out back then and Polestar support told me that I still definitely had the upgrade, but that the app had an issue that the global team were looking into and would eventually fix it with an OTA update. Fast forward to this month, I see that others on this forum have gotten their Launch tab back, so I reach back out to Polestar support to see why the Launch tab was still missing for me and after a few back and forth emails, I'm greeted with the following:

I regret to inform you that your VIN: [redacted] does not have the PSWU installed.
Our system reflects that it is a candidate for Purchase of the upgrade.

Should you need anything further please feel free to reach out.
I did reach back out by phone and they are looking into it further, but it occurs to me that I really don't have any actual proof that the car ever had the upgrade.

The original owner didn't turn in the proof of purchase, nor the stickers/badge. It bugged me that the car didn't come with the stickers and badge, but I got over it. I didn't know there even was a proof of purchase certificate nor that I'd end up needing it in this odd situation.

So, while I wait to hear back, here are three things I'd like to share:
  1. Keep your proof of purchase for the PSWU, since it seems like Polestar isn't keeping their copy.
  2. If you're buying a used PS2 with the PSWU, make sure you get that proof of purchase from the prior owner.
  3. If anyone has advice for ways I might be able to get some kind of proof, I'm all ears.
Things I've already tried to no avail:
  • I've looked through my phone for any pics I might have taken including the Launch tab
  • Searched archive.org to find any cached copies of the old listing
  • I contacted my local Polestar Space, who are trying to reach the previous owner. They couldn't find anything that helps me in their records.

I've definitely continued to launch w/o benefit of the handy timer. Still fast, but the throttle response is not what is once was. Without paying to put it on a dyno I have no way to know what kind of power the car is actually putting out. I suppose I could find a nice flat stretch of road and try to time it with some other kind of app.

Thanks all for your helpful replies. You're all correct that it is tied to the VIN and should stay with the car. I've checked all the documents I received and none make reference to this upgrade.

I'm not sure how unique my situation is as far as Polestar removing the PSWU. You can see at least one other instance of Polestar removing the PSWU here:

https://www.polestar-forum.com/posts/249198/.
@clivem may be able to shed more light on their experiences with this.

What probably is unique to my situation is that I am not the purchaser of the upgrade, so I don't have any proof that it was purchased. No sticker, no badge, no certificate. Just the crystal clear memory of:
  • seeing it in the sales listing and in my PS specs profile after taking delivery
  • talking to the Space manager about this car's upgrade (e.g., getting the stickers and badge from prior owner, confirming the upgrade stayed with the car, chatting about why he didn't get it on his company car which was otherwise my car's twin)
  • and, of course, using the Launch tab once or twice when I first got the car and then forgetting all about it until reading about it disappearing for others here on this forum.

Don't they realize for them to remove it, it had to be there in the first place?

Looking back over previous posts on this topic (but different thread), I found this from a Swedish Polestar owner:

You can clear the cache, but if you clear the “data”, for whatever reason, the app will be gone. At that point, you would have to contact Polestar. I accidentally cleared the “data” on a 3rd party app, and it was gone. Luckily for that, I only had to re-download that 3rd part app again.

I don’t think you will be able to do that with the performance app, but will have to work with Polestar to get them to re-load it for you. Good luck.

It’s also possible that the launch tab is gone, but you still have the performance app? That can be verified by using a device like Draggy to measure your times. if you do have the performance app, your 0-60 times with > 75% SOC, on level ground and moderate temps should be 4.1-4.2 sec. Without the performance app, you’ll see something like 4.4-4.5 sec.

@highpks I cleared data and cache, now my launch tab is gone in the performance app.

Oh thanks for sharing that. I'm glad I didn't clear anything after finding out that I can't uninstall the app.

Part of me wondered if my prior 0-60 times were stored in there, and possibly available as further proof that I had the Performance Upgrade and Launch tab at one point. Android Automotive is so locked down though, I don't see any way to dig into that stored data myself.

BTW: still waiting to hear something conclusive from Polestar, but they have been checking in regularly to assure me that they are still investigating. So I've got that going for me :)

Get the Beta (not Alpha) CSV app. It is CarStatsViewer, and you have to apply for a test group. While driving, it shows instantaneous power in kW being used. On my car, before the upgrade at 90% battery, it showed just nder 320kW (maybe 316 or 319, I forget), and after the upgrade it showed a peak of 368kW or so. Even at 35% battery it now shows over 325kW which unmodified cars don't get with a fully charged battery.
That, or take it to a drag strip, I did that both before and after upgrade as well.

I was removed from my test group so boss I only have access to the new Alpha version :/

I didn't notice until yesterday when I set up a new profile on my car and had delayed a bunch of apps to reinstall them (I was trouble-shooting) and clicking on the download link in the group gave me an error about not being able to access the app and to make sure I was logged in with the email that was given access (which I was)

I was in loebse's test group, #10

Nice! I'm not sure why my access was revoked, but I'm gonna reach out again to get back on it. Thanks for the update!

#37 ·
Problem solved! I wasn't removed from the group, I was just using an old link to an outdated release version. Loebse gave me an updated link, and it worked like a charm!

I'll have to double check next time I'm in the car, but I think it's 0.26.2 now

I suspect the car never had it, and you were possibly misinformed when you got it? As for the launch Tab, the app does state it may appear

Nah, it wasn't just a Launch tab and that note is likely just there to cover the case where the Launch tab appears before the PSWU does.

My car's listing had it. Also, just like in @ChristofferG's case, I had the performance app listed in my specs on both the app and the website, and both disappeared sometime in April/May this year along with the Launch tab. My hunch is that I've had happen to me what happened to @ChristofferG in this thread: https://www.polestar-forum.com/posts/243208/ .

The difference is that I don't have any proof.

I would say to everyone else out there, save all documentation, screenshots of app and Polestar page showing your car has been upgraded with the Performance Upgrade.

Yep, better to be safe than sorry!

Polestar got back to me reiterating that they don't have a record of it, and asking if I have proof of purchase. It's like they aren't reading the case notes at all. I doubt they've done any true digging. There has to be a trace of it. For example, I wonder if they looked through the purchase records for the name of the prior lessee/owner or for the VIN. For all I know, they're looking in the same erroneous database that cause the wrong OTA to get sent to me in the first place. Anyhow, I'm just about out of patience and energy for this.

You bought it CPO, that means from a Polestar Space, so ask the Spacemen for the details again.

Maybe I’m missing something….if the OP has documented proof (e.g., on the car’s advertised features, signed statements from Polestar sales/service reps)) that the car had the performance upgrade when purchased….this seems like a no-brainer. Even if the performance was inadvertently erased by the technicians, or even if the app was inadvertently cleared by the OP….Polestar should make good on this and download the app, again. If the app is still there, what’s the most that would happen? It’s over-written?

The app remains with the car, and has nothing to do with who first bought it, or subsequent owners. The app is tied to the car’s VIN.

I think the problem is that whoever you have gotten into contact with at polestar is judt some random dude that checks the car stats, just like we do in the app, and says you dont have it, since that what it says, and dont know what to do more then that.

of course there is a record of this car having bought this upgrade, you just need to get in contact with the right part of polestar.
And no, everybody in Sweden wont be on holiday at the same time at the same department, if it needs to go to Sweden to solve this…

but of course, this should not have to be your part of the problem, Polestar should find the right person to fix this.

But, as a long time problemfixer for customers, in 99% of the time its the easy solution, and in this case that is that you never had it in the first place, and that puts them in the akward situation of having to deal with you without telling you that the problem really is you.
And they wont send you forward until they have figured out that you ARE NOT the problem, because they dont want to bother other people higher up with things that is fixable or not wrong at all.
And without proof you are in a real catch 22 moment.

It can take months (from experience) to get over this first step when dealing with customer service!
And this is not a Polestarproblem, its universal.

Focus on getting confirmation from THEM about PU purchase.
You dont know but they HAVE TO KNOW!
