....the car is immediately going back to the shop. 😕

UPDATE on page 2, post #22 as of August 25.

So, my car went into the shop back on July 7th because 1.3.17 (nevermind 1.3.18) failed to install and said I needed a service center to complete the installation. While at the service center on the 7th, that's when notification of the safety recall, RP1063, went out and they then couldn't give me the car back. So it sat at the dealer waiting on parts until I was able to pick it up this morning, 7 weeks later.

I get to the car and the first issue is that they forgot tools inside the car. There was a panel puller, a panel bladder, and long metal rod, and a battery jumpstarter all inside the car. Okay....so I take that out and walk it back to the service advisor.

I then go back to the car, adjust everything, spend two seconds looking at the Abbey Road app (which confirmed to me that at least I was on the newer software), and then I set off home, because I have a work meeting I need to get back for. Then, as I'm driving, I go to the actual software page and there it is, the same message that was there that initially had me bring the car in for service in the first place!

Also note that the car IS showing the temperature, in Fahrenheit, and that there's a 5G connection. This will matter in a moment. I notify the service advisor about the message and he reviews it with the lead tech, and they're puzzled why it's there.

So I get home, plug it in and walk away. It locks on walk away, but I also have the keyfob since I had given that to the service center.

Then I'm in the house, check the car and it says "Connected without power". So I check the Chargepoint app and it shows the charger is powered and the car isn't requesting anything. Damnit... Okay, so go back out to the garage and first...the car doesn't unlock. It doesn't sense my phone. Put the phone to the handle, and the NFC reader works and unlocks. So I'm back to door handle roulette. But back to the charging issue, the car is stuck on "Initializing" and it's cycling the charger every 30 seconds or so but not starting a charge. Awesome. I several times try unplugging and restarting the charging session and the car keeps hanging up.

So soft reset #1.

Reset completes and now the car does begin taking a charge, but.... now the cell connection is dead, the car shows zero degrees celsius, and the HVAC shows as off and that the last setting was LO, but the fan is blowing nice cool AC. Mind you the HVAC system was on before the reset and set to 72F.

Better still, if I look at the digital key settings, not only is everything gone, it now shows:

Yet the NFC portion of the digital key still works, the key still exists in Google Wallet, and weirdly....it continues to show my wife as having a digital key when hers is the shared one, not the primary one. Another soft reset did not resolve any of this. So opted to go with a hard reset, and that did resolve some of this, but still have the message about not being able to get OTAs, and the digital key I was able to completely remove and reset and it worked twice....then failed again.

For the 7 weeks we had the loaner Polestar 3 the digital key worked every single time. Charging worked every single time. The infotainment and HVAC worked as it should every single time.

I'm very much starting to think that ours has some unresolvable issues. So now they're sending back out the loaner we just had and taking this one back to the shop....AGAIN.

@nbvolks I just got word from the dealer in Denver that my new GHCA has arrived and they'll be installing it this week. They said they should have it wrapped up before the end of the week. I asked them to confirm that the part is from the new batch/supplier (based on your earlier comment and the timing, I'm presuming it is). I know you just posted 2 days ago, but has your dealer updated you on your new GHCA yet? Really pulling for you to get it back ASAP and with no further issues. Such a bummer it's been such a bad experience for you (and, honestly, so many of us).

Today marks 100 total days...

Knowing today would happen, I spent part of the day yesterday communicating with Polestar US, about next steps. At this point they've initiated the lease buyout process and will present the options in the next 4-6 weeks. With that in mind, I think ( I don't know) our options might be....

1. We get our car back and keep it, because at least we know it has the newest (hopefully) GHCA and the recall work is done. But....maybe this car is just not a good car specifically, and we'll be right back in again for something else.

2. We swap for an identical car pulled from stock. Upside is that it would be a newer build. Downside is that we'd be taking on a new mystery of potential issues.

3. We already have a P4 on order. That was supposed to be the car we got, but when it was delayed for the US, we went with a P3. So we just hold onto our P3 (or the loaner) and then redo and adjust our lease into the P4 we have on order.

4. We just take the buyout and walk away and go to another brand. Downside there is that there could be unforeseen issues with that too. Options we've mulled over:
  • Porsche Macan (smaller backseat area, but can be similarly spec'd for the price)
  • Porsche Taycan Cross-Turismo (smaller backseat area, but MUCH more expensive. Very cool though!)
  • Lucid Gravity (Higher price, plenty of room and functionality. I don't love the exterior shape and design.)
  • Cadillac Lyriq V-Edition (I like it, my wife cannot get past the Cadillac brand. I don't like the front seats or the interior color options)
  • Volkswagen ID.Buzz (VERY different vehicle. It's fun looking and drives well. Interior materials are not great. Dealer lease pricing is RIDICULOUS!)

So very frustrating @nbvolks. And that GHCA backorder botch is icing on the cake now. 😡 The 4 would be awesome. I haven't had the car for as long as you, so I can't say what I'd do if I were you.

But mine has been in service for about 24 days now (less than the 30 needed to get out of the lease), and if all goes to plan, the transport company will be bringing it back this weekend. My lease is relatively short, so I'm still planning on keeping it even if it goes back in the shop again, then making the decision to swap at the end of the lease. Polestar Denver Service has been really good, communicative, and have hit all the timeline estimates they've been able to give so far, although they obviously couldn't give a timeline for the back ordered part, so the time waiting for that was unknown until the part actually arrived.

Good luck with whatever you decide! Your posts on here have been tremendously helpful, so I'm hoping you stick with Polestar! 😁 But, if not Polestar, I'd hands-down do the Lucid if I could justify the price (my buddy is a director of powertrain engineering there, a former Ferrari F1 guy). They're incredible.

Regardless, thank you for your input, advice, and posts on here.

You are going from the frying pan into the fire with a tycan. They can't give them away in the UK. Think it's one of the most recalled cars in the last few years and a huge reason for Porsche huge loss of profit tanking sales and share price.

They have had global recalls and other issues with battery fires, airbag failure, faulty front brake hoses and. Some reports also mention recalls related to welding and suspension failure.

Porsche has lost it's shine. 911 it's last basion really.

Taycan refresh seems amazing - and they seem to have the issues sorted now. Range is great, charging speed is great, and you can get a wagon too… I have two objections - price and lack of one pedal drive!

So I recently test-drove a Porsche Macan, and I was actually thinking about buying one. But man, I was really disappointed. The suspension’s super stiff, the car rocks around, the sound insulation sucks, the handling’s just okay, and the interior creaks whenever you press on stuff. Honestly, you’re just paying for the badge. I don’t get why anyone would spend that kind of money on it. I also looked pretty seriously at the Polestar 3, but the brand’s resale value and future worry me, plus the software issues. So for now, I’m sticking with Tesla — I ordered a Model Y Performance. Gonna drive it for like a year, maybe a year and a half, and then see what’s next. Oh, and I live in Spain.

It's pretty sad to see how badly Polestar botched this rollout. The car is a joy (when it works) and a costly annoyance or worse (when things don't work, which is quite often for more than a handful of us). I'm really doubtful that the Polestar brand will be able to come out of this.Their lackluster customer service and follow up, which has nothing to do with their software programming and testing expertise makes me doubt that they can compel new customers to pony up even more for the 5. Volvo is more likely to salvage this situation than Polestar.

The problem I have is no one else does the EV experience as well as Polestar… we test drove the Audi Q6 and just couldn’t get excited about the car. Compared to the 3, it was cheap inside, driver profiles were halfhearted, you needed to push the shifter twice to put it in one pedal every time, and the one pedal tuning wasn’t as good.

I picked up my P3 last December. The only other car I test drove was the (then new) Macan EV. I drove the base version and it was ...nice? Singularly uninspiring considering it's a Porsche and the expectations that engenders. The P3 in contrast felt more engaging, more comfortable - just overall a much better experience. I didn't bother to wait for the Q6 despite having driven nothing but Audi's since 2001 - my last being a 2013 A7. Just didn't find the newer Audi's compelling. Based on the reviews, doesn't sound like I missed much by skipping the Q6.

I'll note I've been lucky with no major issues at all for my P3 and I'm at 16,000km. No regrets on the purchase at all - really enjoy driving it.

Yup, most EVs are priced to perfection, and have "issues". I think manufacturers who make an effort to take care of their customers will have a better chance of coming out of this than those who don't. I agree with the Q6 - wouldn't touch it, but hopefully Audi and their dealerships are doing a better job of customer care.

Yet another update...

Now the car is supposedly done, but they can't release the car because the tech needs to send the data logs to Polestar in order to finalize the case, and they saying that now won't be done until Monday. Come on!

At that rate, why not keep it until Tuesday and make it an even 50 straight days in the shop this time around? 🤦‍♂️

Such a bummer @nbvolks! The weekend seems SO long when you're waiting for something like that. In case it gives you any hope for when you do get your car back, mine is still going strong 2 weeks post-delivery after replacing the GHCA. I hope you have the same experience after you get yours back. I've been charging as needed at home (Level 2) and it's been great. Also, the 1.3.18 software update seems to have fixed every one of the issues I had previously, and those issues haven't come back. Knock on wood, but I haven't had to do any resets either.

There are two little niggles that I believe are new (or I didn't experience them previously), which 1.3.18 is exhibiting.
  1. The Spotify app sometimes displays blank/black with a cursor in the middle of the screen. It fixes itself by the time I get in for the next drive cycle without any intervention. Hopefully an upcoming software update will solve that. The song still plays and I'm able to skip forward/back/etc., but I can't get to the main Spotify page to browse my playlists, search for music, etc. The workaround is that I just end up using Spotify on my phone if I need to in those cases for the rest of that particular drive cycle/session.
  2. Sometimes when a call comes in or when I make a call, the bluetooth connection doesn't project to my car speakers/mic - I can neither hear the person on the other end, nor can they hear me. The workaround is to quickly flip my phone to use its phone speaker instead of the bluetooth connection with the car. I have not yet determined if this is an issue with my phone (Google Pixel 9 Pro XL) or if it's with the car connection itself - it could be on the phone side. I just don't know yet.

Oh, it gets worse!

They came back and said it was going to be ready after all. I said great, and then asked SPECIFICALLY if the OTA update failure notice was cleared. The thing it originally went in for 3 MONTHS ago. "Yes, confirmed that is removed and there are no errors".

Drive into the dealer, clear all my settings from the loaner. Pull in, get our receipt and keys, go to our car, get in, and.....the f#@king OTA failure notice is there!!!

So now we're back in the god damn loaner which I have to set back up all over again.
