Its part of my 19 button press startup process one needs to do every morning startup

Switch off lane assist 2 presses
Speed limit warning (that detects wrong speeds) 2 presses
Driver alert (just useless) 2 presses
Front camera recording 4 presses
Defrost wing mirrors 3 presses
Select spotify, but play a playlist random 6 presses

And that's all set as shortcuts whenever possible. Lol.

Better cars
1 button customisation to switch off the assists (but you may want to keep some on because they work well).
Music no presses - restarts where it left off.
Defrost mirrors 1 button.

So 19 against 2.
Great friendly UI Polestar but i think you must try harder

Mine is
  • Switch off lane assist (2 taps)
  • Front camera record (3 taps + 1 tap to home)
  • Press play on Spotify (1 tap). Not sure why you need 6 presses if your playlist is already loaded and set on shuffle...
So 7 taps in total, not the best but liveable. There are several things that significantly reduce the setup time for myself before travel though:
  • In Australia, the speed limit warnings aren't reset after the car is switched off
  • The car is always parked in a garage so no defrosting needed. Winters here are also fairly mild, so frosting isn't a significant issue
  • Also if you're really concerned about the number of presses on Spotify, you could just stream it from your phone via Bluetooth and have the media player on the home screen. Then just press play on that to start the music with one tap.
To be honest, the number of taps before driving begins doesn't annoy me too much, considering my old vehicle was a manual transmission with wind-down windows, manual mirrors, manually-adjusted seats, no climate control, and only a CD player with a USB connection.

Aren't these 1 press and 3 presses?

Mine is quite a contrast.

Open door.
Select drive.
Drive.

I tend to switch off the speed limit warning (one press now) once I get the first reminder.
Lane assist doesn't bother me too much, same with driver alert.

  • Walk up to car
  • Stand at door for 30 secs waiting for the handles to pop out. Do I use the time wisely? No, I always reach for my phone and it unlocks before I can get to the app..
  • Get in, enter PIN code for my Google account (6 or 7 presses)
  • Wait for text messages to clear (they cover maps)
  • Enter map destination (a few presses), even if it’s local, for traffic
  • Dash cam (remember sometimes, 4 presses)
  • Drive

The rest, like Spotify, is done while I’m driving mostly stopped at lights. I tend to wait until out of town then use pilot assist to help if I’m going through the screen on the move.

Speed limit warnings generally stay on, I’m not bothered by them, even when they’re not correct. On the odd occasion I actually appreciate them when I’ve missed a speed limit sign.

Driver attentiveness alerts only when I have a particular set of aviator style sunglasses on, because it’s every 5 to 10 seconds for the entire trip..

My car with a petrol combustion engine is far simpler. Door unlocks as I approach, keyless start so press start engine button, engage gear and drive (Ok I have to put on my seat belt and release the handbrake but so does everyone). Why are EVs so awkward to use?

Its a company lease car. Accidents without supporting camera footage mean I pay the £500 excess, so I get into the habit of doing that.

Speed warning - the beeps do annoy and its made worse by its inaccuracy. Think i would leave it on if it worked like my old Volvo (ie worked well not 10% of the time).

Lane assistant- likewise its a wide car and when im avoiding potholes I instead get constant vibrations on some roads, and so switch off on start.

Driver attention- i have 2 long slow bends out of my estate with poor junctions. The steering wheel blocks camera view and shows im not paying attention. Dont want to have the caf history showing 'i wasn't paying attention' if there is an incident here (again company car reports). Worst thing is you need to be in drive to switch this off).

Then spotify - id use the USB app as preference but that is a seriously useless app, and Bluetooth is ok but its hands / eyes off the wheel. (Maybe to issue is lack of integration and functionality from steering wheel for any of the audio apps.

So many other cars have
Car camera apps that work.
Single configurable buttons to automate several actions.
Better audio integration.
Hence Im stuck with what we have got.

Oh yes and I didn't mention the merry dance with the will it or won't it see the key and let me in...

So far the only one I have found I need is the speed one - and it's a single press on the steering wheel. As others have said I'd happily leave this on if it worked as well as it did in my last 2 cars (space / Model Y) but its wrong too often.

CarPlay - sometimes auto-connects, and sometimes doesn't. If not, that is a few annoying presses especially if I am listening to live sport and want to transition to car to continue (Radio 5 Live issue makes this worse).

Not looked at the camera yet - so that might be something but then I never needed sentry mode on the Tesla in the 3 years we had it.

Re: Mirrors. Doesn't the car automatically do this based on temperature IF you have a pre-condition option set up? Weather hasn't needed it so far but this would be mildly annoying - can this be one of the 'short cuts on the screen'?

When it's really cold, they do come on automatically, but that doesn't help for the rest of the time when there's just condensation on them.

That said, it's only ever a maximum of two presses away (one press on climate, then the button is there).
