Hi All, my car is due for delivery in a couple of weeks, and I've booked it in to have the rear windows tinted already. I found it a bit strange why it's only the rear screen that's tinted, so I want the rear side windows done to match.

Anyone have an idea of what percentage to get so that it matches? Also, any pics of a magnesium car with the windows tinted?

Thanks

I went with 50% ceramic tint (I hope that it's what I got :-D ). It's hard to capture the difference on a picture, it's just a little bit darker. My main goal wasn't an esthetics but a practicality since we are driving with a baby in the back.
I'm going to try to find perfect light to capture the difference today.

You do have to say how much that cost, but in general what's the ball park figure for something like that?
I only called one shop (they did my previous 2 cars) and their price for Xpel ceramic "XR Black" is ~$380 for the sides and back and ~$480 for the slightly more performant "XR PLUS" line of tint. They weren't familiar with Polestar so they just gave me the price for a "normal 4-door". For that reason, I guess these prices might be a bit high as the Polestar 2 is apparently pretty easy to tint (partly because it doesn't have extra little windows in the back and I'm also guessing the hatch makes it easier to do the back window).

The price they told me for the windshield is ~$180 for "XR Blue" tint. (I'm thinking about requesting either the Black or PLUS instead though.)

This is in Albuquerque, USA. I doubt it matters, but if it does, these prices are for ~35% for the sides and back and 70% on the windshield.

OP is in the UK - we're not allowed to tint our front side windows. Well, you can, but by a tiny amount, and the factory tint is already nearly there.

@Dww159 - I had 18% done on mine, looks like a good match for the tailgate and roof. Just ask the tint place to match the tailgate - they'll hold samples up to it (or use a meter).

I have a little bit of a stupid question, but my P2 is the first car I've gotten tints on. I did the 4 side windows and the windshield. the shop told me they used a heat reducing tint that blocks most heat from entering. it definitely feels cooler than before when it was stock, but my question is should the dash and steering wheel not feel hot at all or very mildly warm now that it's got the heat reducing tint? I noticed today in the LA sun when it was about 80 F out that my dash was still pretty hot and the wheel was even pretty warm as well until the AC was on for a couple mins then everything cooled down. did the shop jip me with some cheap film tint on the windshield that's still letting heat in or is that how it should be?

I'm new to the "tinting world", but from what I understand ceramic tint blocks some heat but definitely not all, basically your interior temp will go down about 10-20 degrees, let's say from 150 to 130-135.
I definitely notice a temperature difference here in the hot California sun after adding my ceramic tint. Well worth the cost IMHO for the added comfort, privacy and security.

Just for fun I tried to measure my tint performance with a "Solar power meter":
1. Direct sun light - 325.5 BTU (today is not that hot in SF Bay Area, around 78-79, going to try again on Friday it should be close to 97)
2. Stock tint (front side window): 85.5 BTU (better than I expected)
3. Stock tint + 50% ceramic tint (rear side window): 33.2 BTU

Based on the results seems like I wasn't scammed 🙃

One side note: since my tester can "see" wavelengths only between 400-1100nm the ceramic tint performance might be even better since tint manufactures claim that ceramic tint performs better on wavelengths closer to 1500 - 2000nm.

In terms of the tint percentage, it depends on your personal preference and local laws. Typically, the rear windows are tinted to a darker percentage than the front windows for privacy and sun protection. In most Tint Shops in Costa Mesa, the legal limit for the tint percentage on the rear windows is 25%, which means that the window allows 25% of light to pass through. However, some states allow darker tints, up to 5% or 10%.
