Trying to confirm Dolby Atmos

Testing Dolby Atmos, I am using the Apple Car play app, and within there I am using apple music, I selected to play the "Dolby Atmos Speaker Test Tones", which goes through the speaker systems sequentially, "front left, tone, front right, tone, etc." But everything sounds like it is coming in from the same location, there is no change in position. Is this normal? I tried other sound settings, like abbey road, but I can't get what I think I should be expecting.

Am I expecting too much, am I using it incorrectly, or is this behaving like it should? Can anyone test on their PS3?

Thanks,
Zeliard

Some others claimed that Amazon music was also now supporting Dolby Atmos, however I'm not so sure. I have Amazon music, and while there are songs and playlists labelled as Dolby Atmos, they don't seem to be recognized as such by the car.

In Tidal, when playing a Dolby Atmos track, most of the sound settings are locked out. This does not happen in Amazon Music.

I was able to confirm that Dolby Atmos works in Amazon Music but it requires a paid premium subscription (the basic Amazon Music available to Amazon Prime members does not work.) When Amazon Music is playing Atmos there is a "Dolby Atmos" label under the song that is playing and the sound settings are locked out as you describe with Tidal. FWIW I have found Amazon to be a much more reliable / stable experience than Tidal.

I have a PS3 with the plus pack (Bowers & Wilkins door trims and the additional tweeter perched in the middle of the dash).
I’ve recently decided I really wanted to try out the Dolby Atmos - inspired by the fact I have a friend coming around next week who’s got an album that has been remixed in Atmos…. So thought we could go for a drive - But it doesn’t sound any different. In fact it sounds pretty poor.

I’ve got a tidal subscription. & I’m Using the tidal app in the car. I’ve set the bit rate to 24-bit 192kHz.
I’ve searched for Dolby Atmos and played the ‘Dolby Atmos Speaker Test’ but all channels sound exactly the same (apart from the LFE channel).
i very briefly get a Dolby icon pop up under the song name when I change tracks, but this goes away quickly.
If I use the tidal app over car play (where the Dolby Amos icon remains while playing) it sounds fractionally better (perhaps stereo rather than mono), but certainly not surround.
I’ve tried rebooting the infotainment system. I’ve changed all the sound settings in the car (studio, stage, abbey Road) but they all sound the same.
Any ideas what I’m missing?
Thanks all!!!!

Success. Got it working! 😁

  • Went into system, apps, tidal. Removed data, then removed the app.
  • did an infotainment reboot.
  • reinstalled tidal.

The Dolby icon stays on, sounds amazing. What a difference!

If I go into sound settings I’m told it’s not available while playing Atmos content.

😊. Thank you! 👍

I also hope that we get this with either CarPlay or a native Apple Music app, which even Toyota and Tesla offer as part of their infotainment systems (not Atmos, but the native app would be a good start). It is absolutely supported by Apple over CarPlay, but this is now on Polestar and Apple (and probably Google Automotive) to implement. A little frustrating, but Apple Music at least sounds pretty good to me with the B&W system and my lossless library there, so it's not a huge loss IMO.
