My post this morning disappeared for some reason, and I am re-posting it again below:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am waiting for the car to be towed to my nearby Space as I am typing this message on my phone. Very frustrating experience. Please pardon the typos and the dirty screen when you read this post.

I thought I could be spared by many problems discussed on this forum, but I guess I am not the lucky one.

Only after 1,918 miles, my 2022 single motor Polestar refused to move when I returned to the car after driving for like 20 minutes this morning. I got two error messages, indicating propulsion system failure and acceleration performance reduced. The little yellow turtle appeared on the dashboard and my car is not driverable.

Adding insult to the injury, neither the SOS nor the Connect button were able to get me to the Polestar service for an hour. I got through the line a couple of times but the call quality was terrible and dropped. I am in the downtown area of my city so the cell service should be good. I finally Google the Polestar roadside assistance number and called through my cell phone.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this car when it works well. Unfortunately it’s probably not very reliable, at least in my case. The propulsion system warning has happened before but the car was driverable. So I took the car to the Polestar Space a few weeks ago, and they assured me the problem was fixed. I guess not. There is a reason it ranked last in the recent JD Power survey.

UPDATE1: While waiting for the towing service, I left and locked the car to make a quick phone call. When I returned to the car after 5 minutes, everything functions as normal again. I immediately drove to the nearby Polestar Space, which is only 4 miles away from where I was.

Let's hope it will be a quick fix. It is frustrating that I just had the car at the Space for the same issue a few weeks ago when the car was still driveable.

BTW, the towing service just texted me that they will be there in 90 minutes. :) I am fortunate that I don't have to wait for them.

UPDATE 2: I got my P2 back after a week at my local Polestar Space. They claimed that they have replaced the inverter and it should fix the propulsion system failure due to "internal memory loss."

Although they initially suggested that the inverter has to be shipped from oversea and they don't have an ETA for the part, it arrived last Friday. I don't know if it helped (I doubt it) but I did complain to Polestar Customer Service via the Chat function last Friday about my P2's persistent propulsion issue after only 2 months' ownership and 1,800 miles.

I hope this will be the last time I visit Polestar services until next scheduled maintenance in two years.

Hi,

i only joined this forum because I'm still dealing with this error since 3 months and I was googling it for references.

I have the single motor, standard range.

Back in April I had the car for just 3 weeks and then this happen 2 times exactly what happened to you. Couldn't move for 1-2h. The first time I thought it was a glitch because the battery was at 11%. Second time happened the same way and battery was over 35%. So it got towed to get repaired at a volvo workshop. They discussed it with Polestar technicians who said the inverter needed to be replaced. Should be done in 5 days. That didn't happen and I ended up waiting over 2 months for the part but not a single person could tell me when the spare part would arrive for over 1.5 months.

I just got it back and went for a drive to see if I can replicate the error after the repair. I could and got stuck on the motorway again. This time, I literally had to fight polestar connect person to get it towed. It's back at the workshop and lets see if they say its the inverter again or something else. I've read posts on other sites that people with the same errorhad their electric motor replaced twice and still not fixed.

I am very sorry to hear what you have gone through with this issue. Mine happens to be the single motor as well, with pilot and plus packages.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that my issue won't be as bad as yours. Good luck with your repair.

Definitely, I will give an update once I hear back from the Polestar Austin Space.

The silver lining of the whole ordeal was that the car broke down AFTER I dropped off my kids to the summer camp and the daycare, respectively, in the morning. I cannot imagine to be stuck on the road with two little kids in such hot weather in the afternoon.

I had similar experience some weeks ago. Propulsion system failure with turtle and wonky engines.
I parked and used the SOS button, waited 90 minutes in the car for the towing service while watching YouTube vids on the Vivaldi app.
Also rebooted the system a couple of times while waiting with no luck. Just before The towing service arrived I decided to go out and buy some stuff at a nearby store, and when I got back in the car the warning was gone. I have been driving without issues for weeks after that, so it looks like a software glitch. Seems like you must get out and lock the car for a while to get a proper reset.

..So I guess I'll get out, lock and wait 10-15 minutes should this happen again.

Another thing, for a while I got the slippery road warning sign on dry asphalt shortly after starting to drive. This happened during 2-3 months this spring, but I haven't seen it for many weeks now. Not sure what to make of that, but I have extremely little faith anyone will find something wrong should I take it to a repair shop.

I got my P2 almost two years ago, and it's been mostly problem free.

Sry to here about that. Happened to me also with about 1300 miles on the odo. They had my car for 3 weeks. Ended up sending a message to Polestar letting them know they were getting closed to Florida’s lemon law and that tomorrow I’d be sending a certified letter to their office to start the process. Shop called the end of day the next day to let me know my car was ready. No issues since with a drive from Cocoa beach to Maryland under my belt. I didn’t notice that now the cooling systems comes on while charging with EA America and driving, which I dot remember hearing it before.

Not sure if will help or mean anything but here’s my service receipt.

Disclaimer: I’m just a regular dude with no EV tech experience and your issue may be completely different from mine.

Thanks for sharing your experience and glad to hear that your car is problem free for now. I will give an update exactly what they do to my car when I get it back, hopefully by the end of this week.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I know there are others struggling like I am. My estimated delivery is Aug / Sep so I have to make a final decision soon. It is not an easy decision. Too bad the car market continues to be such a mess right now which limits options.

Buying a car like this should feel exciting not concerning. I want to know I will be able to get from point A to point B. It won't be a good feeling if I end up hoping I will be able to get from point A to point B every time I walk up to the car.

I shared your concern. If you ask me whether I will still get my Polestar after these issues, my answer, as of today, is still yes. The driving experience is much better than any ICE cars that I have driven, and I am not sure I want to go back to any ICE in the future.

Remember people only come to this forum to vent their problems, and many people who are driving problem-free Polestars won't be posting any "boring" news on this website. This is a selection bias in the frequencies of positive vs. negative posts on forum like this.

What software version are you on @polestarinaustin ?
@AgtFranks paperwork indicates an update to 2.1 - are you on 2.0 or earlier?

What about the other folks with this issue - are y'all on a common software version?

I don't recall seeing this number of propulsion errors before the past couple of months, except shortly after launch when there was an identified issue with drive train components for some cars and a recall was done.
Given the timing, I suspect these reports are related to either 2.0 or 2.1, especially as @polestarinaustin 's issue also was correlated with a possible TCAM issue as SOS/Connect didn't work.

my software version is 2.2, and I received the update at the Polestar Space when it first rolled out. It was the handicapped version without CarPlay.

Just to clarify, I was able to make calls from SOS/Connect, but the call quality was extremely poor, and the call was dropped twice. I was in downtown area and the cell service should be good. Hence, I am not sure it’s a TCAM issue, right?

How do I tell if I have a launch edition? I got mine off the lot as a 21MY and I’ve had to get my inverter replaced very early on in my ownership. I also had a ECM replaced around the March timeframe. I picked it up September of 21 if that matters.

Same issue propulsion system failure on my brand new 2 month old 2023 Polestar 2. I am so disappointed in this car. The screen freezes often and then goes blank. Not very comforting. Miss my Tesla 3 - so much more reliable. My car is a couple of hours away - no idea when I will get it back. They had told me -if anything happens the flatbed it and bring me a polestar or a Volvo. Well that didn't happen. I am driving an Enterprise Honda Accord. Ugh...

#40 ·
I know how you feel--I was very frustrated with the propulsion system failure issue. On the bright side, this problem never occurs again (yet) after they replaced the converter.

I did not experienced the screen freezes issue, what is the software version on your P*2?

As for driving a Honda Accord as a loaner, that definitely sucks. Can you ask them to swap it with a P*2 loaner should it be available later? At the minimum, email Polestar customer support, and you should get all the gas expenses covered.

#42 ·
Before people start to dump on Polestar, get down and kiss the ground that you aren't this guy in America: Tesla's customer service was (also) no help.

May 22, 2023

Sorry to hear about the OP's problem, but at least your car didn't (also) catch fire and was totaled.

Tesla's and fire seem to go together?

#43 ·
Fire is the worst possible scenario, and although it can happen, it's far more prevalent in ICEs. Otherwise EVs are computers on wheels. There are so many chips in these cars, and so much software, that there is always the possibility of something going haywire. I think Polestars as a group have been doing ok. If you browse other forums you'll find all sorts of horror stories involving software. Support is another issue entirely. With the global worker shortage, there simply aren't enough talented people available to hire for what are essentially low paying jobs. This cuts across industries!

#44 ·
I agree, ICE cars have a higher frequency of fires than do EV's....about 8x higher frequency according to recent data. But suspect that a major source for ICE fires can be found in much older cars that have developed gas leaks in the engine compartment, and ICE fires that happen after a collision (caused by a ruptured gas line).

What's interesting with the Tesla fires, like the one in the linked article is, there was no collision. By all appearances, no incident that should have caused the fire. The owner was simply driving his model Y on a motorway off ramp, when it caught fire. Oddly, there have been numerous documented Tesla fires that "appear" to have spontaneously started, like this one.

But what caught my eye (why I posted), as it relates to the OP's experience with Polestar, the Tesla owner got no help from Tesla customer service, during and after his car was incinerated by the fire, that apparently, was caused by some Tesla defect.
