My car was in the shop on Monday because of the Wheel of Fortune noise. New drive shafts were ordered in advance.

When the shafts are to be installed, the technician found that the associated gear teeth on the gearbox are worn out.
After consultation with Polestar, a complete rear engine has now been ordered. Differential, gearbox and engine are a common spare part. It costs ~$8500, thank goodness it is a warranty case.
Drive shafts on my car have been replaced.

This has always been my concern. The noise comes from play on the splines between the drive shafts and the differential. Replacing the drive shafts may reduce the play enough to eliminate the noise, but with the differential already damaged it will come back. Is Polestar just hoping that that will be beyond the warranty so they don't have replace the motor unit under warranty?

My shop said it’d be a half day’s work (replace both rear axles, no motor swap).
I’m sure you’ll survive ;)
I'm an hour from the space. They would have to pick up the car and then determine if they think it is what I hear. Then order parts, and then fix it. Unless they are willing to bring the car back and forth twice, it could be a hassle.

Would you prefer the hassle of a broken driveaxle, or shredded diff splines?

Down here in Texas, an hour away is what we call "across town." Just drop it off, go home in the loaner, and then go get it when they tell you it's ready.

So my noise is more regular and always below 15mph. But yesterday it was so nice I had the windows open and the motors sound really whiny. And then after a long drive (everything warmed up) the car wouldn't even make the flapping noise at low speed.

Yes, it is definitely temperature-related. The noise always recedes when the drive train is warm in my car.

Finally bit the bullet. They replaced both axles in no time at all and the parts were actually in stock (which I must say is shocking). I survived! 🤣

It's also not a busted-ass Launch Edition that's in the middle of a mechanical failure.

Edit: Presumably.
Actually the loaner was a launch edition, and it had the same noise going on, albeit still a little less prominent 😂

Just got my vehicle back for something that sounded similar. I’m aware my issue may not be identical to the issues others were/are having. It does seem at the moment to be fixed. Will be curious how long until it recurs.

Performed road test and confirmed customers concern. Per TJ found slight rust buildup on wheel/hub surfaces. Per TJ cleaned up wheel and hub as best as I can and applied paste where the two surfaces meet and road test vehicle and verified no unusual noise heard from wheels as compared to similar like vehicle. Note that generally squeaks and rattles are covered for first 12 months or 12,000 miles. This was covered as good faith to client.

What did they replace for you?
According to the quote he posted, they didn't actually replace anything, but rather remove the wheels, clean the rotor/wheel faces, apply an anti-seize-like grease, and reinstall. I can confirm, having DIY'd that fix, that it really does eliminate one of the clicking noise the car sometimes makes.

I think this was mentioned earlier in the thread somewhere.

Yeah and annoying because I had seen that mentioned, and asked my tire/wheel swap place to try it, and they thought I was insane for asking. I even specified the anti-seize brand that was mentioned here earlier. They wouldn’t do it.

But at the same time I don’t trust Polestar’s chosen Volvo service center to do my tires since they have both given me a mismatched set and then on a separate occasion installed tires inside-out.
