Polestar 2 (2023) Activity Key & Fob Confusion – Can Someone Explain?

Hi everyone,

I need some help understanding what’s going on with my keys because the logic completely escapes me. Long story short (and don’t bully me, I know I’m a mess)…

First, I lost my Activity Key and later ran over my main fob. When I lost the Activity Key, I bought a replacement on eBay and planned to have it programmed but never did. About a year later, I crushed my fob. Luckily, I was able to start the car by placing the damaged chip (no casing) in the center console.

Eventually, I purchased a new fob and also brought in the eBay Activity Key. The dealer warned me there was no guarantee the Activity Key would work since I didn’t buy it from them, and I’d still have to pay even if programming failed. I accepted.

They told me they programmed both successfully (and the invoice says so). But when I got home and tried setting up the app:

  • Only one key showed as connected (“Connected key to profile – Key 1”).
  • The digital key and remote functions failed with the error: “All keys are needed – make sure all 2 keys are present in the vehicle and try again.”
  • I tried everything (both keys in console, cup holder, outside, etc.), but it never worked.

When I called, they just said: “Sorry, that was the risk.”

Here’s the new discovery: the Activity Key cannot unlock the car at all. But if I unlock the car first with the fob, then place the Activity Key in the center console, I can actually drive. So it seems it was programmed for the immobilizer (start/drive) but not for locking/unlocking.

My questions are:

  1. Is it possible they only programmed it partially (immobilizer but not locking)?
  2. Could the old keys still be registered in the system, causing the digital key setup to fail?
  3. Before I go back and risk another $100 “no guarantee” attempt, is there a way to confirm whether the Activity Key can be fully recognized or if it’s just limited because it came from eBay?

Thanks in advance — I just want to understand what’s happening here.

I think your problem with activating digital key is that you didn't remove the old keys so it's looking for more than the two new ones. The wording in your post is slightly off: what it's actually doing is stage 2 of the pairing process: searching for keys, not searching for 2 keys.

To setup digital key you need all registered keys in the car, so if those old ones weren't removed when they programmed the new ones the car will still expect them to be present.

The profile linking is done manually, no keys are automatically linked to any given profile, so again, this might imply you have an old key linked still.

Hope that all makes sense! TLDR: you need the old keys removing, both new keys seem to be working okay.

Thank you I think this makes a lot of sense, actually i forgot to mention that the car cannot be unlocked with the activity key, i need to unlock the car first with the fob, then place the activity key in the center console.

unfortunately that didn't work out very well.. i broke the key.. i'm not very crafty tbh.. do you know if i could just pay for the activity key to be removed and then the car will stop looking for it and let me register from my phone using the app? i don't really care about the activity key i did all this because i want to have access from my phone.

It's not the activity key that is your problem: even with a dead battery, it will be recognised if placed in the cup holder. You yourself have said that you can drive the car with that key, so that is not what is stopping you registering your phone.

What is stopping you registering your phone is that the old/lost keys have not been removed so it's still looking for them too. You will need to have those keys removed (and may as well remove the now broken activity key too). The important thing is that you end up with only the key(s) you have and know are working registered otherwise the phone pairing won't proceed.
