I was considering keeping the car when my.lease expires next year, but am having second thoughts about hanging on to an orphaned vehicle.

Wondering what other leasors are thinking.

I traded in my 2019 Chevy Volt for the same reason - that it was "orphaned." My '21 Launch Edition P2 /may/ get replaced by the P4 that I have a deposit on if the P4 - 1) makes it the US and 2) at least meets my expectations. My P2 was bought on a 0% 5-year loan that will be paid off next April so we'll see how that works out if/when the P4 arrives.

To help think about it break it down into a couple of factors:

  • How hard will it be to get parts?
    • The car is still selling and being manufactured (in China), and there will be a clutch of modders, DIYers, and TDS guides on how to do repairs
  • Will you be out of warranty / how much warranty work would you require?
    • There are many on the forum and elsewhere at 100k miles or more with no to little catastrophic failures
  • What is your time frame to keep a good car normally?
  • Is the current cost lucrative enough for you to deal with maintenance?
    • Currently selling used between $18-29k, not bad IMO
With all of these factors plus the unknown if the EV situation will change given how some very big manufacturers will be boxed out of our market and how the auto industry will ramp up lobbying efforts.

Ultimately, make an informed decision based on your wants, needs, and limit as much of the unknowns as you can. Hope this helps. For the record, I decided to buy after lease turn in, instead of waiting for the P4. I knew the car well enough, I knew the limitations and what I was getting into and had a goal of keeping it for at least 4 years and anything above that is a win.

I financed my car with the intention of keeping it for a few years and I'm really enjoying it. With just under 40K miles on it, it's been really reliable other than a full 12v and TCAM reset a few weeks ago (which I documented here ) which was an easy fix, I plan on driving mine for another while. The Polestar 2 is a wonderful design that has aged well and I still get comments on it today. My hope is to get either a Polestar 3 or 4 when the software becomes more stable. I'm not worried at all keeping my car until I'm ready to trade up.

We leased our '24 P2 from Prestige Volvo in East Hanover, NJ. The actual contract was with the Polestar Short HIlls office, but the test drive and contract was all handled at the Volvo dealership, and they also told me that Volvo would handle any servicing that the P2 might need. If you're thinking about hanging on to your vehicle, might be worthwhile to give Prestige Volvo a call.

The Polestar 2 was discontinued in the US, but Polestar is still here. I'm in central NJ and recently turned in my 2022 lease and bought a 2023 CPO. I have been getting my P2 serviced at Princeton Volvo/Polestar and just recently they opened a new Polestar space in Manasquan (at Volvo Cars Manasquan). The new space is even closer to me and probably where I'll be going from now on. I'm not too worried about support and service for the foreseeable future.

Short Hills seems to have moved into the Volvo dealer in East Hanover (Prestige Volvo). I recently made my 2 year service appointment with them, you just need to call their phone number… they don’t take appointments via the app.

I’m thinking seriously about that… my buy out is $34k, plus $400… I’ll see what a used 2024 with the same specs costs then… there’ll be a bunch coming off lease so I should have data.
