Sport key

After 2 1/2 years my p2 sport key stopped working. I was told by the dealer that a new key is free if the car is under 4 years old.
Doesn't sound right to me. Any one have any info on this?

My experience was that the dying sport key opened the car but would not start it without placing it in the "key reader" which is also known as the cup holder inside the center console. My first sport key was replaced by my US dealer under warranty, but, they forgot to unregister the dead key. Certain service actions require that all of the car's keys be in the vehicle to proeed. This was a pain point that could have been avoided if the procedure had been followed when the old key was replaced...

It's good to hear that the sport key battery is replaceable at the cost of replacing the shell. Sounds like a job for my nephew and his 3D printer! Or McGiver and some duct tape!

Does anyone ever have an issue with the car not unlocking with the sport key? It has happened a few time and I have had to open the app on my phone to unlock the car.
Yes. This was the first sign that battery was dying for me. I'd go to the car in the morning and not be able to unlock. Once I unlocked via app the sport key would work perfectly all day. Then next morning same issue.

Do you get a low battery warning before the sport key stops working? I'm worried that mine will just stop working with no notice (now that my car is ~3 years old).
I did not get any warning that my battery was running low. See above message. I used the sport fob as the primary key for about 3 years before I started to have issues.

Do any of you know if you can get a replacement key without traveling to a service center? I live in Utah and my nearest service center is 500 miles away in Denver. My sport key is starting to fail and I'm still under warranty for another year. I can't imagine Polestar would tow the car to Denver to replace the sport key.

If you have a bit of a DIY spirit, you can also change the battery at home. There are many different methods for changing the battery, here is one video made by a Finnish guy.
Of course, the key is not waterproof after changing the battery, but I'm sure very few people dive with the key.

In Europe (at least in Finland) the car warranty is two years, and the same warranty also applies to this key.

I changed the battery in my sport key, because it is already over three years old. I found CR2032 batteries with completely identical contacts to the original battery in a small Finnish online store. Changing the battery was a really easy job (if you have ever used a soldering iron). I also ended up covering the key with a shrink sleeve and the key feels now really nice to handle. It has a slightly soft and rubbery surface. And if the next owner of the car wants to change the battery, it will be a much easier job.

This CC key shell is the only printable one I've seen. That's part of why I want to DIY my own. In theory you could also print my design, but I want something nicer.

My plan is to CNC ash which I can then coat with black/white polyurethane to mimic the interior trim. I have 2 basic designs figured out, but the dealership I was buying from pulled some slimy stuff so I backed out and don't have access to a key yet. Just waiting for the right car to pop up again...

That looks right, but I'd just get a CR2032 holder and be able to swap batteries in the future. Here is an example that would be easy to attach. I plan on doing something smaller/lower profile, like this, but that's going to be slightly trickier to attach.

As for my 'prettier replacement shell', I've realized I'm really butting up against the size limits of what I can reasonably CNC, especially with final wood thickness and the metal details (I was thinking polished brass would be a good 'Swedish gold' stand-in). I have one design that might work, and I'm tinkering with the idea of 3D printing a core and then wrapping that with an Ash veneer in order to save some thickness.
