I asked the same thing about 7 months ago ;-) Trunk Kick to both Close and Lock?

 

Just close with kick and lock from phone when you have hands free again, or use full key if close enough.

 

When tailgate is open, doors are closed and hands are free, lock with phone or key. Fill your hands with all You can carry and do the kick. Trunk will then be locked.

 

I often have a problem opening the trunk with a foot. It will just beep at me and not do anything.

Do it like kicking football. No sweeping sideways. Between left side and number plate, under the bumper. And your key in pocket.

 

Then take a step back. If you’re too close the trunk lid won’t open.

 

One motion up, right in the center. Works every time for me. I used to do the multiple sideways thing … until I read the manual. No issues at all from then on.

It's fascinating how these things have been designed without considering how people will actually use them. Surely the main use case for kicking to close the boot/trunk is when you have your hands full of things you've taken out of the boot/trunk, and you'll be walking away and don't want to leave the boot/trunk open, nor the car unlocked, so why would they design it to not close and lock at the same time? Same as the car not locking if you leave it unlocked for a period of time. The default behaviour should surely be to auto lock if you forget to lock the car.

I'm actually one of the cars that they didn't put the chip in and have promised they'll retrospectively, but it doesn't feel like I'm missing out too much!

Because you might lock your key in the car if they do that

EDIT: I'd also note that I haven't come across any other car that lets you kick and lock to close either. So it's clearly a very widely understood reasoning amongst the automakers on why they don't. Walk-away locking would help though.

 

What if, when the trunk is open and before your arms are loaded with packages, you lock the car with the key fob or PAK then kick to close. Would it lock then? I guess I could try that myself but I just thought of it and am at work and can't get to the car for a while.

 

So far my experience has been if a door is open the polestar will not lock

 

I am doing a straight kick right in the middle. I still have trouble.

Question for those where kick-to-open works flawlessly, are you using PAK or the keyfob? I am using PAK.

 

I'm using the key fob and I do a slow round foot wave just to the left of the license plate. Works for me every time.

 

Perhaps everyone should film themselves performing a kick. Sounds like there would be a range of techniques

 

The way the manual describes it just works every time for me. People who played soccer, just natural ... my wife, not so.... .... , she does this weird robotic motion up and often standing too close the the vehicle ... but she's like 5'5" so it's harder for her to keep the right distance naturally.

 

I have never used the kick function to close the lid. It never even occurred to me that it would work at all. 😂

Now I know how to both close and lock with my foot (and fob). Thanks for the tip!

 

I figured this out. I determined it had something to do with me having my phone in my back pocket (I am using PAK). If I take it out and hold it close to the trunk lid, it works. It's not ideal, given the whole point is for when you have your hands full, but it is what it is.
