Discussions about the political approach to utility supplies tend to be very country/state-centric. Best to restrict those posts to a thread dedicated to that ?
Yes. That was my thought. This was for rates and that’s it. The why and how and venting about those would be best met in a politics thread in the other section.
This was just for what everyone pays. What’s likely to change etc best in other. Perhaps I’ll start one this weekend.

From BG&E (for some of Maryland):

”What is BGE kWh rate?

When the pilot ends, you can stay on the Time of Use rate until April 1, 2022, or you can switch back to BGE's standard flat rate for electricty. The BGE rate is currently $0.07 per kWh during off-peak hours and $0.36 per kWh during peak hours. BGE's standard flat rate is currently $0.11 per kWh.”

I only charge during off hours, which I believe starts at 9pm, until October. Yes, the rates can fluctuate during the year, and time of use. As well as if you sign up for a certain period, lower rates can be locked in.

That pilot program is over for time of use rate. That was for whole-house use. It is not currently available. (Even your post mentions ending a few months ago)

They have an EV rate for charges that are wifi enabled.
What you listed is not currently available or the right thing for EV chargers. If you aren’t in their EV program charging doesn’t matter when you do it as it’ll be the normal residential rate which does not currently change per time.

If you’re charging “off hours” with bge in maryland but haven’t registered your charger, you’re just using the same house residential rate as always because the time of use pilot is done (and you had to be a part of that program anyway). The current ev charger program has a time of use but you must have your charger in the program.

I’m with Allegheny Power and also in Maryland. My rate is 0.0615 cents per kWh everyday all day. Allegheny Power is the provider but we buy ours from somewhere else. I forget who without going to look for my bill. I also have solar panels and whatever I don’t use I sell back to the grid. Every couple of months I get a check for $100 to $150.

I know what I posted. Simply pointing out that rates, off hours, have been, or can be as low as $0.07/kWh.

Flat rate is $0.11/kWh

However, from this, if I enroll in their EV Smart Vehicle Time of Use Program, off peak hour rates are as low as $0.037/kWh (or were??) But it would appear that my home charger is not on their approved list? Maybe when I have more time, I’ll call.

But it’s not 7c and hasn’t been since that program ended and that was only if you were part of the pilot program. Lots of people think they got special rates for off peak use but they didn’t.

You said you charge off peak times but you were still getting charged exactly the same. Why were you charging only off peak?

Same 11c as any other time (before taxes etc) unless you enrolled in their time of use house pilot program that ended in April no matter.

If you’re charging at night on BGE don’t do it for the savings unless your charger is enrolled. You may be doing it for your neighbors in terms of overall area grid use and that’s fine. But zero money savings to you.

Why were you charging off peak again?

(It’s not worth the debate… look at your bill).

It’s not clear to me, that the rates are not lower after hours? Once I get a chance to talk with someone at BG&E, I will be able to confirm whether there’s any reductions of the rates after 9pm? I will also enquirer whether I qualify to enroll in their program? But if you are correct, and theres’ no advantage to charging at night, it’s no big deal to me…but good to know. Thx.

Serious Apologies for coming off curt (like first round is on me for being a dick). Yes, bge is complicated in MD and on standard R (residential) plan there is no advantage for off peak use. There was a pilot program that ended.

The EV rate is very good and is under 4c off peak if your charger qualifies (WiFi and they can track). It’s a small penalty if on peak. There’s also a $50 rebate if you end up being 90% off peak for the year. You have to apply.

We did two chargers, one registered and one not, so if we need to charge on peak we use the one on normal (R) rates. The state install rebate paid for the second charger in terms of cost.

No problem.

I totally agree that trying to figure out their rates, their plans is almost a full time job. .

I figure if I really want to save some money, I will take more advantage of the free charging that Polestar offers for 2 years through Electrify America. There’s one a few miles from my house…

I have the Wallbox Plus, which I think allows charging/sharing for two EV’s. Right now, I only have one.
