Managed to crack the rim of my front passenger side wheel - the reason for the pressure dropping. They say it is still safe to drive on, which surprised me.

Part availability unknown right now... I'm on the 20" non-PP.

Loaner received! - 2021 launch edition Thunder with Charcoal Weavetech.

Dropped Brett off at the train station - safe travels to him!

Got the call - replacement rim came in today, no additional damage found, and software redo has sorted the telematics.

Plan is for University Volvo to finish up and drive it back here to swap sometime tomorrow, but don't have a time yet.

Feeling cautiously optimistic.

Sorry if you have already confirmed, are they charging you for the rim? Or was a defect found?

Got my car back ($916 and some change) - I asked the driver to park the loaner beside mine for a photo before he left since I haven't seen two side by side yet.

Drives well so far, but there is a software update pending...

I also didn't have a chance to look at the cracked rim yet (they did remember to bring it). Hopefully will have a chance tomorrow.

Funny Story!
I cracked my front passenger rim two weekends ago. In my case this was the standard size 19" rims and its not surprising I creaked the it. I was driving on a mountain pass during a rainstorm and a small rockslide (common when it rains) left a 5" chunk of granite rock in the road. I hit it at ~40 HMP and punctured the tire bad enough to also strike the rim and crack it. Replacement rim was about the same cost and I was originally quoted a 11 day wait, but they ended up finding a replacement rim in 3 days. Go figure!

I think they have scotty (Star Trek) running the engineering department. His philosophy was to always double the time expected to fix something then when it’s done early the captain is happy.

sorry to hear about the rim it’s always painful when the car is damaged and all you can do is blame god or the wife. Neither one listens or cares and all you end up doing is raising your own blood pressure.

Talked to University Volvo again - they are trying to figure out how to get another P*2 out to me to borrow.

If any of y'all are trying to get in touch with Polestar USA C-suite people, they are in Charlotte right now.

University Volvo called - they are driving the loaner P*2 to me, and then I'll take the gentleman to the train station so he can take the train back.

I asked if there was any limit to the amount I could drive it - I drive about 60 miles on an average work day - they said no limit. (y)

Curious what the SOC will be when it gets here - it's 114 miles away.

Unsucessful string pulling to get the replacement rim sooner, so could still be a week or two before I see my car again.

Called University Volvo in Charlotte's number - had to leave a message.
Called Polestar CS, they said they would email Charlotte to let them know I need to hear from them, but didn't have any other power to help.

Update: called Charlotte's Polestar Space number (Space is at University Volvo) - they put me on hold while they got up and walked over to service. Service picked up, and said they would call me tomorrow with an update on part availability and next steps...

Pretty sure I did the same thing to a wheel on my old GTI. I had to put air in the tire about every week, which worked for about 4 or 5 months, then it got to where I needed it every 2-3 days, and then daily.... You should be fine until the rim arrives, but be extra wary of speed holes and bumps.

If you really want to sort the issue, there are many places that can repair rims. They should be able to get it done in a day, and will be quite a bit cheaper than buying a new wheel. You could still order a new wheel, and use this one as a spare wheel, should you ever need one again.

University Volvo did not call me back in the morning, so I called them after lunch.

They then told me the same thing as far as the rim being a 6-12 day wait, and costing a few cents more ($666.86). They then told me to call Polestar Roadside Assistance to get it towed since it would not get above 30 PSI this morning.

Tow truck got here around 4:45 PM and headed off to Charlotte.

Driver got to Charlotte and was not sure where the drop box was - I also don't know since I have never been. He put they key in what we hoped was the box...

Hope I see my car again.

University Volvo called this morning - received the car...whew!

Rep said that the VP of Polestar showed up at the dealership this morning and said that they can get the rim faster than 6-12 days. 🤞

Awaiting news on rental/loaner...Polestar Roadside said the dealer would handle it, and then dealer rep asked if Roadside had hooked me up. I told dealer rep what roadside said, and got a "hmmm..." and that he'll have to check on that.

Not a cracked rim, but I sure did bend the heck out of my right front PP rim last week.

All this on a relatively minor pothole at 50 mph.

Called Polestar Charlotte and luckily they had one in stock. $1100 shipped, though! 🤮

I actually drove around town for two days on it with the rim like that (had no other option and kept below 35 mph). I felt like Fred Flintstone bouncing around. Won’t do that again. If I had been able to see how bad the rim damage actually was, I never would have driven it. But I asked and my tire guy said it would be OK just annoying.

He said he actually sees this damage fairly frequently on Mercedes forged wheels.

Cracked another - passenger rear this time. Brought it in to Discount Tire for a puncture and they found the crack. They think it will be about $850 if they can get it. If not, I'll be rim shopping for all 4...

Update 5/9/2025: they were not able to source one, so I'm going to swap them all out with aftermarket rims. Maybe I can find some that are more durable?

Update: ordered www.discounttire.com/buy-wheels/msw-type-44/p/157880. Similar to my current ones in that they are shiny front face with dark inside faces.
Cheaper to buy new locally than to tow it to Charlotte, get an OEM rim, and arrange a trip to pick up the car. 😬

Update 5/14/2025: new wheels installed

The tech took a photo of the bubbles coming through on the inside, see below.

I must have hit one of the million potholes/constuction plates around here just right...

Rim will cost - $666.80. Bad omen? Expected in 6-12 days.

Looks like now is a good time to set up the compressor in the garage! Will need to reinflate every couple/few days.

Your tire tech will hate you for it, but I'd throw some latex sealant in the tire. It should be able to cure the leak until you can get the wheel replaced, assuming it doesn't progressively get worse.

Called University Volvo after lunch today about rental/loaner - we are all learning how this works at the same time... They won't be able to tell me anything till tomorrow.

I threw out there my dream of them letting me borrow an XC40 Recharge, but that was shot down with a "we only have one on the lot..."

Besides, I drive about 60 miles a day - depending on how long it takes them to get the rim, a loaner will be considerably less new when returned.
