I just finished hard wiring my dashcam (Nextbase 312GW) into the fuse box in the passenger side footwell, using the hardwiring kit from my previous car. The hardest part for me was locating a power source that switches off when the car is locked. To my surprise, I discovered I could simply use one of the empty slots for the power source (position 82 in my UK model Polestar 2). I found a ground point using a screw head located behind the glovebox door (detach and swing the door down to reveal the pollen filter and glovebox mounting screws either side). Finally, I note that the camera remains on for several minutes after the car is locked but does eventually power down.
I finally found a suitable splitter for the micro fuse and installed the camera in my own car as well. That fuse slot 82 is really a good place to power in LHD cars as well. Thanks for the tip :) The power will turn off about 7 minutes after the car is locked. At least in LHD cars, the ground can also be found quite close to the fuse box.

There is a company called fitcamx that sells a flush-mount mirror connecting dashcam. Very reasonable price and looks integrated into the mirror housing. They have a Polestar specific version. I emailed them today and got the install video for the Polestar. Looks straightforward. I may jump on this train…

I would attach a video but apparently I can’t do that so here’s a link

I ordered this two days ago. Should be here in a couple of weeks. I'll be sure to post about my experience but so far they've been very response (as a company)

So far the only part that I think I'll miss is the parking/sentry mode. It powers on and off with the car so it's literally just a dashcam, but the price point is really good (just over $200 in the US on Amazon). Looking at video quality from other models it looks pretty good... presume the hardware's the same across all the models. However, I can't find any sources other than YouTube for comparison videos and their video compression sucks ass compared to Vimeo for example. I'll probably upload some test videos to Vimeo for comparison's sake once I get it installed.

Looks like a great place to tap the power for our detector woes.

Please please please provide a video of the install because I am a coward and don’t trust that I will be able to install it correctly. Thank you!!!

Also, use the dashcam for the video so we can judge the quality...

I'll be doing the same.

If you look online you can find videos of install in an XC-40 and it looks super simple. Our car's almost identical.

I am not super impressed with the video samples at the end, but I really believe that's more a function of YouTube's hyper-compression of video that tends to blow out whites, and the algorithm deliberately blurring stuff like license plates. That's why I plan to upload my sample videos to Vimeo.

The only bummer for me right now is I got my shipping notification this morning and it looks like it won't land until the 21st... when I'll be in Detroit on business for 10 days <sigh>

Here are some short clips of footage from the fitcamx

Better footage in my opinion. It seems pretty standard quality.

Looking into this now and I'm liking the way the Fitcamx fits, at least for the front camera. Has anyone tried the rear camera too? Can't seem to find an installation video for that.

I don't have mine yet, but you can search for videos of XC40 and it's pretty similar to the Polestar 2. It's a single cable that runs from the front unit to the back and seems easy enough to hide. I'd budget about and hour to run that cable if you haven't done work like this before (moving interior trim to hide cables) but other than that it doesn't seem hard.

I have a Blackvue that I haven't installed as it wouldn't look good. Fitcamx is finally something that looks like it will work and the rear camera is pretty small. Placed order today :)

I have an OwlCam 4.0. I need to pull it out of my Volvo and install it into the Polestar. It connects to the OBD2 port. It has a monthly fee but alerts me when people are trying to get into your car and i ran down and ran a few people off past couple years.

Plenty of videos on Facebook of the fitcamx in a polestar. I wouldn't go for one, sure the mounting etc it nice but it means it is in the wrong location and about 50% of the screen contains static information, rendering it just about useless in my opinion.

I'd just go again with something like a BlackVue 950x discreet installation, good quality, no bloody screen on it, power management is excellent in parking mode, and just works when you need it.

I can't for the life of me find that ground bolt. Where is it?! [USA].

Also, I have done a test between my Viofo A119 V3 and the Fitcamx here is some media:

Comparison - Google Drive (full video of comparison night time)
Dashcam - Google Drive (link to all videos, fitcamx are in .ts format, need VLC or some other program to view).

Some stuff is that Fitcamx tends to over-expose at night and during day. While the Viofo A119 V3 is not over-exposed and you can see plates and other things a little more clearly. Here are some shots of that:

It's hidden under the bit of styrofoam, just down from the fuse box, on the passenger side (left in the UK) - I guess that probably switches to the right in the US. Basically wherever the fuse box is, pull the carpet back a bit more, slide the foam out and the bolt is near the bottom of there. The best thing to do if you have a spare nut is simply to add the new nut onto the end of the bolt and trap your wire between it and the existing nut. If you loosen the nut, you will be removing the ground from much of the dashboard and it clicks away most unhappily!

I have the FitcamX installed in my Polestar 2 and I'm afraid I can't really recommend it. As shown in TheNorthStar's photos above, the camera ends up angled too far downward (probably because it's designed for the XC40). This results in traffic lights often being off-camera which reduces the usefulness of the device when trying to prove who's at fault in an accident.

The camera is SUPER easy to install and, honestly, they could just redesign the enclosure to fix the angle problem.

Take a look at mroek's mod here to for a better alignment.

FitcamX is apparently working on updating the enclosure for a better fit for the PS2. You may contact them to see if they can send you the new one.
