Heat pump noise

Hello All,
I have a question for those of you who have cars with the heat pump. Is it normal to actually FEEL the heat pump running when it turns on? And, do your heat pumps oscillate up and and down during rapid charging? Whenever my heat pump turns on (when I'm stationary) I can feel the vibrations in the floorboard. I mean, it's not terrible or anything, just wondering about others experiences with this as this is my first electric car...

I had exactly the same problem. I spoke to customer service in the UK and they were good as gold, they booked me in for a service and the guy at the service center said it was a know problem, It’s the mounting bracket for the AC compressor and there is a redesigned part available from Polestar which they ordered and fitted a few days later and now the problem has been completely cured, it’s as quiet as a church now, just as you’d expect from an EV!👍😀

@TJB Yes, that sounds exactly the same as mine was but since I had the new bracket fitted it has completely stopped. Just for the record, mine is a 2022 model and it made the sound right from when I first got the car about seven months ago but at first I thought it was normal and just put up with it. Then after a while and reading a few threads here I realised it wasn't and put in a call to PS CS and they sorted it straight away! 😃

I have the same vibration/noise, and it's definitely different than the noise that happens when the fan is cooling down the battery. I can hear the noise and feel the vibration at my feet when the AC/Heat is set to anything four clicks or above its lowest setting, but the vibration/noise generally happens only when the fan is simultaneously cooling down the battery (either during charging or post-charge). The vibration/noise doesn't generally happen when I'm just driving around with the AC/Heat on.

It was reported that there was a new AC compressor bracket that was redisgned for the issue of vibrations from the compressor after fast charging. I also experienced this on a hot day this past week and have a scheduled appointment this Thursday. Another problem I noticed was that when I got back on the highway the faster I went the louder it got and when I turned the AC off it went away. Is this also the bracket or just an over taxed compressor. Has anyone had this issue and gotten the bracket replaced. Here's the original post:

I'll be following to see what you find out about what they find and possible solution.

Short story - the compressor is electrically driven so noise would not be related to vehicle speed but by cooling demand, whether inside the cabin or for battery pack temp management. Now I don't know the full setup but there could also be a fan under hood for heat transfer purposes and so between the fan and compressor, there could be quite a bit of audible noise when getting back underway after a stop and on a hot day to get the cabin to temperature setpoint.

I had similar experiences with my Launch Edition last summer when driving on a hot Florida day with the A/C on.... a loud droning sound when the A/C compressor was running. This was particularly noticeable when at a stop light but was still there when driving - just not as noticeable due to road/wind noise. This doesn't happen on cooler (yet still warm enough for the A/C) days, and has nothing to do with DC fast charging for me, since I never DC fast charge. I'll check it out when the temps rise here in Florida again, and if it still occurs, I'll ask at my local Space about that redesigned bracket.

If I were y'all and the space/dealership didn't work with me- I'd call Polestar CS, explain the issue and the commonalities with other owner reports, then cite Polestar's resolution (updated bracket) and ask that the bracket be expedited to the Space to make up for the inconvenience.

May get them to move on your behalf and work with the Space. I'm all for improving the service of a $60k+ vehicle, so they gotta hear complaints of what customers are dealing with in order to improve.

Sometimes you gotta be a Karen to get things done. But only sometimes. And nicer IMO.

Just called Polestar USA at 800-806-2504 (press 1) and they said they have never heard of this issue?

The shop foreman at Volvo Palo Alto said they will drive the car home today. I told him how to repro. Let's see what they say.

There's another thread on this topic but most people are not in the USA / have not brought the car into the shop:

Hello everyone, I've posted about this topic before. I'll provide some updates on my 'journey'. I've been experiencing the drone, the motorboat, the jet, the worn out bathroom fan, whatever which way you want to describe it... happened when really hot (high 20's to mid 30's C), the drone would get louder as speed increased and quiet down when slowing to a stop. Yes, I know that there is no mechanical connection between the rotating driveline and the AC components, but I'm just telling it like it is. It was so loud and obtrusive that I could feel the vibrations under my feet. Also noticed it when the heat pump was running in colder temperatures. I lived with it for just over a year (went through a summer and a winter) before having it checked out at Polestar. In May of 2023, they determined that it needed a new AC compressor. P/N 36011847 58743 Compressor, EXCH, was replaced, along with a wiring harness. Within 2 months of that repair, the weather got hot, and the AC had quit on me on a few occasions, blowing warm moist air and requiring a shut down of the car to 'reboot' the HVAC. BTW, the drone was still there - the new compressor had not served it's intended purpose. The diagnosis this time was a faulty valve. P/N 32373474 98741 Valve housing, was replaced in August. As the summer wore on and temps continued to be hot, I noticed that not only the original noises not being resolved, there were now even more weird sounds unbecoming of a so-called silent EV. This round, the system would thump, and howl as the system turned on and spooled up. I would describe the sounds like that of a very old building's piping system, like water hammer, and air in the lines kind of noises. This seemed to happen after the car had sat for a few days, unused. Most recently, and the most acute occurrences of the thumping and howling, have been when the temps started to drop again (near freezing ) and the system (appears to be) switching modes from cooling to heating. A thunk and uuuuurrrrcchh, is now added to the repertoire before the compressor starts it's jet engine rendition. And the floorboard drone as speed builds and lowers as I come to a stop are still present.

Side note, I have not received any new brackets (that I know of) and it sounds like that wouldn't have helped anyways.

So, I have been in touch with my new friends at Polestar service... they are trying, I can't fault them for that. This time, I'm told there is a new superseded part number for the AC compressor, and so it sounds like I'm headed towards my third compressor in the coming weeks. Not sure about timing, this all came about over the past week. Apparently Polestar has some head office techs in town for training. I'll update as this unfolds.

Ok, to be clear, I'm not here to rant. My sincere hope is that this sharing of information will result in a solid solution to the problem. And I hope I'm not coming across like a crazy Karen/Chad (apologies to those named as such). I'm a gear head, car guy. My other rides are a supercharged modded Audi with an aftermarket exhaust, and a good old naturally aspirated V8 powered SUV as my junk hauler. I know what a good combustion engine sounds like, and what a nice clean EV 'should' sound like, and so I'm 2 out of 3 at the moment... Fingers crossed that I'll be advocating the Polestar again soon! This issue aside, I really do enjoy this car! Ok, that and the little niggling software shortcomings... :)
