Please sir may I have another tax?
It is not really a case of wanting another tax, it is a case of ensuring that the tax paid is used sensibly. And giving rebates on luxury goods for rich people is even by my love of a low tax society and small government not really the best use.

I find it hard to understand why I should pay for someone else to be able to afford a Polestar? There are plenty of cheaper choices available. I get the part about stimulating green policy and ween people off their dependency on fossil fuels etc but I don't think policies favouring the richer of society are smart.

Before our provincial gov’t changed policy, EV and green initiatives were funded by the cap and trade approach to reducing carbon. Fees collected were returned to consumers through programs to reduce home energy use or EVs.

it isn’t a poor use of public taxes since this is a targeted tax and a targeted redistribution. Collecting taxes or fees on carbon emissions shouldn’t be directed to gov’t general revenues or programs.
Even the replacement Carbon tax is refunded at the end through our income tax filing. Increasing carbon taxes, increase the refund amount. The incentive is on our own actions to reduce energy use so more of the refund stays in our pocket.

The Destination Charge does not count, so you can get the Single with Pilot or the Dual with zero options.

  • The purchase price cap of $50,000 refers to the final purchase price of the vehicle, which is set by the manufacturer, and is intended to encompass the value of the vehicle itself, in full. The purchase price includes the costs associated with the trim level of the vehicle with all color options, wheel upgrades, drive train or battery upgrades, and other packages, such as entertainment system upgrades and tow hitches. Costs not included in the purchase price are destination or delivery charges, sales and use taxes, additional maintenance or repair packages purchased from the dealership or showroom, documentation fees, registration fees, or add-ons which relate to the maintenance or operation of the vehicle, such as electric vehicle charging packages, floor mats, first aid kits, cargo nets, etc.
In my opinion, a vehicle north of $50,000 should not qualify for any subsidy so this was a good move.
Thanks for the clarification.

It seems the Single with Pilot only would be $49,100 or with Plus only would be $49,900, but this would mean you have to select the default Void color, because any other color would add $1,200 and push it over $50k. Or you could get the Single with an optional color option, but that would mean no optional packs. I am guessing only a small minority of buyers would actually choose the limited options that would qualify for the $2500 rebate...

The $2500 might convince me to buy. I was considering a dual motor without options but didn't put down a deposit because Polestar couldn't get organized enough to apply for the rebate. Void isn't my first choice but I'm not sure I'd pay $3700 ($1200 + state losing state incentives) to get a different color.

On the other hand if there weren't any incentives I'd be more likely to pick one pack and pay up for a color.

Massachusetts resident here. It didn't, and doesn't, bother me that rebate doesn't apply to Polestars (or any EV) over $50k.

That incentive works two ways, it incentivizes a consumer in the market for a <$50k EV to purchase the EV over an ICE vehicle, but it also incentivizes manufacturers to actually build vehicles at that price point, which is where the bulk of vehicle sales are. And if you're really trying to influence the market to effect change from a climate perspective, then this is what you want to do.

My MA resident son bought a black base dual motor to qualify. $49900. So for his first new car ever, he owns a frikking dual motor Polestar for $40k after the state and federal credits! 😯

That’s IF Boston Polestar can get their act together and put together a package for the state to approve. 😡

Was he able to see the base interior? How was it? Was the stereo acceptable compared to yours? Also, any chance you know what fees the Boston Space charged him? Thanks!

Hey!

Base interior is just fine. Only issue I have is the mechanical back rest adjuster which is a real hassle if you are trying to adjust further than a few centimeters.

Haven’t heard the premium stereo, but I tend to play my music pretty loud without a hitch.

I actually purchased mine from Polestar Westport. It was the only base model in the US at the time that was under the 50K threshold. All fees (besides destination) we’re about $800. Im sure you could negotiate that number down a bit but I wasn’t too worried about it. 0% APR with $0 down. Very smooth process overall. They’re taking care of transferring my plates over to new vehicle as well.

Also worth noting, MOR-EV representatives told me as long as they add the P*2 to the list of eligible vehicles in your 90 day window you have to apply after purchasing, it should be approved. So that is what I will be (hopefully) doing.

Thanks for the feedback and good luck with the rebate. I'm not sure enough about the car yet (and I don't really need to replace my current car) to be willing to take delivery before the rebate is approved. It seems like this will be a non-issue once the 2023 models are released since any price increase will push this configuration above 50k.

In Oregon we pay an additional “privilege fee” on new cars! Plus no polestar state EV incentives 🤡
But you won't have sales tax on cars. no reason to com[lain. I understand that even ICE cars get the sales tax waived and other EV's have incentives but at least you got something.

Reading about other states, I feel fortunate I bought my Snow colored dual motor with pilot and plus packs when I did. One California incentive knocked $1500 off the purchase price. Another CA incentive program just sent me a $2000 check in the mail for buying a fully electric car. The Feds are knocking $7500 off my tax bill this year . I just got my HOV stickers in the mail and they work on all HOV and many Fastrack lanes. There are Electrify America rapid chargers in 3 places on my daily 64 mile (each way) commute, which are currently saving me $400 per month in fuel costs over my previous ICE vehicle (for the next 2 years of free charging anyway). Keep in mind gas is coming up on $5 per gallon in the bay area. I financed for 0% APR over 60 months. All of these incentives were big reasons I jumped on the car when I did.

Without these perks, it would have likely slowed my adaption of a 60k EV.

the Reflection point for EVs. It is now cheaper. Just be prepared for some future tax and loss of HOV lanes. Enjoy it while we can.

with all cars at or more than msrp, Polestar is cheaper than many ICE cars. A 3 series costs more now.
